Ratings, web interest for the Raptors up considerably

May explain why more games are on TSN lately. Lol

Quote:

On TSN, Raptors games are averaging 240,000 viewers — up 64 per cent since the Gay trade. The four games in January are averaging 268,000, and for the season to date the average is 197,000, which is up 17 per cent from last year. TSN is on pace for the highest Raptors regular season average since 2009-10 — when they missed the playoffs by one game.On Sportsnet, the gains are much more modest, but they have improved. Since the trade, viewership is up to 148,000, up 2 per cent from the pre-trade period.

Quote:

While Raptors brass is pleased with the bump in TV numbers, there’s also giddiness about some web numbers coming from the league head office. Worldwide interest in the team is ballooning, with Raptors-related videos on NBA.com getting more hits from people on desktop computers than any other team — 61 per cent more than second-place Houston. The Raptors are also second on mobile, which is a splashy 848 per cent growth over last year.“What that tells me is that this Toronto story is unusual,” says Hopkinson. “We’ve got people asking, ‘what the hell is going in Toronto?’”

Come to think of it, I think we'll be seeing a lot of games on TSN soon enough. Bell is an official sponsor of the NBA and the Raptors, wouldn't be surprised to see them get an exclusive deal like Rogers did if this continues.

Once TSN no longer has the NHL I think you'll see them get the majority of the Raptor games and most of them should be on TSN not TSN2. It' no coincidence that the ratings have gone up since most of the games lately have been on TSN. A station everyone gets.

the ratings on tsn compared to tsn have gone up the most, so it's not related to the move (which is obvious).

the real story here is the worldwide interest, because the fact that more fans watch the games when we're winning falls under the "doh" category. But for us to be the top online nba team is quite interesting, especially given our lack of stars that usually draw the casual fan's attention.

maybe we'll get some us tv exposure if we keep winning, you know, outside of the playoff games :)

I prefer we do not get bandwagoners

This^^^. Either stick with the team through thick and thin, or don't support them at all. I can't stand bandwagon fans.

LET'S GO RAPTORS!!!!! 01-19-2014 12:03 PM

Not true. I/we have the most basic cable package and there's only RSNO.

Might be hard to do but someone should compare the ratio of NBA ratings of fans who watch on TV to fans who stream games online. Adding the two together might paint a different picture.

Where as some fans probably tune into their games either on mainstream TV or one dedicated channel, the Raps are practically off the grid and scattered all over cable. And the Raptors have a younger audience. You'll see that at a game in the stands. That's a demographic more likely to use other means to watch than the most expensive cable package.

Look how many hardcore fans can't even see a great show like "Open Gym".

actually, you are wrong. Some people like basketball a little bit, but not enough to watch a bad product. I am the same with hockey and baseball, for the most part, I don't like it. But I did watch some playoff games and the odd olympics match - you can watch anything if you have a rooting interest in the game, even curling :)

The truth is, there's only so much time to watch tv, and you want to spend it on quality programming, not shitty sport teams getting their ass kicked.

I think the number of fans who stream is extremely low (in toronto/canada at least). You have to be a real hardcore fan to put up with the shitty quality ...

but the simple truth is, even for hardcore fans it was hard to watch the last few years.

Rogers basic cable doesn't have tsn. I only get Sportsnet. So I watch all games online. I think most other people do that too.

The crappy quality is better than nothing though.

Not if you find good quality streams...*cough* Raptors Video Vault *cough

i would think the predominant reason why ratings have gone up is because the team is winning and the games actually mean something.

That, but imo having moved the games to TSN/SN rather than TSN2/SN1 is also a pretty large reason.

raptors start winning, ratings go up. No groundbreaking correlation here

As for the bandwagoners, I hope everyone's ready for the sea of OVO hipsters at the ASG in a couple years

if that's the price for winning, I'll take it. Heck, add a double dose of bibs mania on top - who cares :)

Yeah, i don't see the problem with bandwagon fans. Every team has them...And if we were to ever have sustained winning for 5+ years those bandwagon fans may stick when they eventually have to regroup/rebuild/retool.

fancylad 01-20-2014 01:27 PM

wait a minute drake fans are considered hipsters?
