Raptors Wanted To Keep Mensah-Bonsu

Quote:

The Raptors wanted to keep forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu this summer, but all their deals made it nearly impossible.

Instead, Mensah-Bonsu signed with the Rockets as a free agent.

"We would have loved to have him back," Toronto general manager Bryan Colangelo told the Houston Chronicle. "We talked to him all the way to the very end when he made the decision to go to Houston. Part of our complication was all the varied deals that were in play. With all the transactions that happened — nine new players from last year’s end-of-season roster, 12 from the start of training camp last year — I wasn't sure how many spots I was going to have left to give another guaranteed deal. I always presented it as it was going to be a last-minute decision.

"I was very interested in bringing him back, not only because he was very much a fan favorite, but because he added that element we were looking to have last year. He was a great tonic for our roster and our situation last year. He brought energy. He brought hustle. He brought enthusiasm. He helped us down the stretch, when we won nine of 13 games."

Well, he certainly reminded them why last night.

I was a little upset they lost him.

Acie 10-16-2009 09:37 AM

Do mean when they clearly lost him on the defensive end and he grabbed five offensive boards and shot 7/8 from the floor? ;)

christian0317 10-16-2009 09:39 AM

apparently he hasnt had that great of a pre-season, which reminds me of a quote from a while back. some reporter asked linebacker Chris Spielman, then playing for the buffalo bills if he was gonna kick it up a notch for an important game...he said that he played every game the same, as hard as he could, if he had another notch to kick it up to, it would mean the other games he didnt give his all.

good quote christian,

i haven't seen pops play this preseason, but comparing the way he played for the raps last season and yesterday it seemed that he wanted to send a message that the raptors made a mistake in not resigning him

but considering the roster that the raptors have reggie evans basically replaced him and brings the same type of hustle, but maybe not the same energy.

i doubt pops could be this offensively potent for the entire season.

AznRayD 10-16-2009 10:44 AM

It's just that the Raps played like crap against Houston.

Premiere 10-16-2009 11:19 AM

I'm glad that Pops is doing well in Houston. He does fit well in the Raptors system, but last summer I didn't have him pegged to return.

carp 10-16-2009 12:05 PM

My problem with pops was never his hustle and energy on the offensive end... but what you want from a back-up to your back-up big isn't necessarily just hustle. I think his defensive accountability needs to improve. Fans love these guys that come in and get dunks or score some points on seemingly amazing hustle, including humphries, but if you watch the entire game they miss assignments on defence way too much and don't really contribute to any flow on offense. But hey, they get theirs.

I definitely wanted him back, as did Colangelo, but I completely understood his decision. He didn't fit here, with Amir and Reggie.

I didn't really think he was a great fit in Houston either, with Scola, Landry, Hayes, Dorsey, and Brian Cook, but it looks like he's found a place there because he's some much more athletic and energetic than those guys. They'd cut Cook if not for his contract, and it looks like Dorsey might be cut loose now because of Pops.

CBA 10-16-2009 03:41 PM

agree w/ others. There wasn't room for Pops this year. He looked good last night, but IMO he played a little over his head last night. All the best to Pops in H-Town.

LX 10-16-2009 03:45 PM

Yeah he wanted him back so badly that he promised him that they would make a last minute decision about him returning.

Over/under on Pops playing until he runs into some sort of leg injury? I'm saying 25 games. I liked Pops, but he just gives me that feeling that he's ready for a complete body breakdown.

With only 15 minutes of playing time a night, his body would be quite well rested and wouldn't even get the wear and tare to break down.

It's too bad the Raps couldn't have found a way to keep Pops. :sigh:

He was fun to watch play! :yeah:

Kuzzy 10-17-2009 07:28 PM

i prefer amir or evans over pops even though I enjoy watching pops play

Rye 10-17-2009 07:44 PM

raps really need Pops this season, now the raptors have only about 5 black players.

Either you're being sarcastic, or you need to lay off the Rye.

first off why would that be sarcasm? secondly how is that offensive?

i agree w/ that statement myself and have said that we need more black layers on our team

blacks are more athletics than spaniards and caucasians, that's a fact

what non black players get accolades for their D?

Chris Anderson is one of the few

and let's face it, euro players really can't play d, matter fact i'll even say a lot of them can't do anything except shoot a J.

truth is that all of the leagues top perimeter, man to man, and post defenders are black w the exception of Birdman
