Default Raptors vs the Leafs

Just watching the Leafs play Colorado and it looks like the Leafs are going to lose another one. They are off to the worst start in franchise history. They have made alot of changes just like our Raptors. Could we be falling into the same trap as the hockey team thinking all our new players will make us better ?

Yes. We're screwed. Let's blow it up and move the franchise to the States.

did you really think the leafs would be good this year? no talent at the most crucial position and no depth. they never had a chance. if the raps fail like this it will be a colossal fuck up.

The Leafs have no proven Goalie, no offense and way too many goons. Who thought that they were going to be good?

The Raps will be the surprise team of the NBA this year. Unlike the Leafs, the Raps have top level talents at their forward positions. They have a very deep bench and a coach who will prove to be among the best in the business as time goes by. Injury not withstanding, this team will be up there, with the best Raptor teams ever. You sure can't say any of that is true with the Leafs.

Now i know last year there was talk that, that Raptor team was one of the best, but you could find many people who doubted even on these boards. Even in preseason there was all kinds of worries about the depth of that squad and what might happen if there was even one serious injury. If Calderon or O'Neal went down everyone knew we would be screwed. Calderon went down pretty much the whole season and we were left without an NBA point guard. There is way more cause for true optomism this year.

Having said all that, once the Leafs get Kessel back and put their young guys back in the lineup as well as Gust in goal they will turn it around in not to long. They are just kinda missing on all cylinders at the moment.

Right now - Leafs v Raptors on skates, the Leafs lose, their confidence is shot!

Why sit 2 of you best players instead of 2 of your 4th liners?

Leafs - get better soon!

Typical leaf fan, looking at the bright side when they're at their darkest.

I see two similar areas of concern between the Leafs and Raps.

1. Lots of new players

The Raptors won 47 games in 2006-2007, but were terrible out of the gate. They needed to mesh. I do think that the Raps could be similar to this year's Leafs in that we start out poorly - but that doesn't mean that the Raps (or the Leafs for that matter) can't recover.

2. High expectations

This is the most troubling difference between the 2006 and 2009 seasons for me. The expectations were a lot lower in 2006, which meant that there was much less pressure when the team got off to a bad start.

To compare to the Leafs again, the expectations this year (set out by Burke) were high, and now there's a backlash after the team has performed poorly. The same thing could happen if the Raps can't mesh right away. Maybe BC shouldn't have come out and said '50 wins' so early.

Yes, bogus, but the critical point at which the Leafs and Raptors differ is STAR POWER. Who was the last 'star' player the Leafs had? Sundin?

The Raptors have one bona-fide all-star in Bosh, another potential all-star in Hedo, talent in Bargnani and a prospect in DeRozen as well as lots of depth on the bench.

The Leafs are mainly a bunch of unproven youth and scrubs.
------

So yeah, the Raptors definitely have higher expectations than last season, but a lot of that is fueled by our off-season acquisitions, not hype, hope, and blind fandom.

I love Leaf fans. They are all "Yeah, sure, I can sit through a couple of rebuilding years" .

And when the team starts loosing, they all scream and cry. What part of rebuilding dont they understand?

I don't understand building a team around hockey toughness. I agree you need some elements of it, but it can't be your focus. You're neglecting way too many aspects of the game .

I mean, yeah, Colton Orr gets in a fight every night - but it doesn't seem to motivate anyone. He just goes out, fights, and then sits in the box.

for people that don't know re building a hockey team is a lot more difficult than re building a basketball team
Roster sizes in hockey are double and they have to deal with affiliates and prospects year round. When drafted, a player in hockey rarely gets a roster spot on the NHL team for at least 2 years while ball players are almost certain of a roster spot, so they can make more of an immediate impact

Didn't the leafs trade away their first round draft pick in this next draft? If they did, then they're not rebuilding properly right now - and Leaf fans have every right to be pissed off.

The only real problem I see is fans making any kind of comparisons with their hockey team.

but they did sign 2-3 young free agents that are 1st/2nd round talents last year
so that decreased the dependency on the 2 draft picks he gave up

Oh my.

Were comparing a team in a slump to a team that has yet to play.

But to answer the original question..... which few of you seem to have bothered to do, the answer is yes.

There is a good chance this Raptor team could stumble out of the blocks, and they could see an injury or two, just like the Leafs, and then they could see the inevitable barrage of media and fan "Bosh backlash". It could be just as painful.

It could also be really nice and fun and full of wins.

There's no sure things at all as far as how this team is going to do. Sadly it's a fairly sure thing that the fans of this town, completely psyched out as a result of their hockey team, will over-react to anything that they can when it comes to the basketball team. I've been saying that for years. Now- if the Raps can actually make winning habitual to the point where it's pretty much boring, then I would hope that changes. But even then, there is still going to be bitching - it's what Toronto does best.

I see it as this way, Leafs fans are blind. They think that beucase burkey said that ya we are a playoff team this year (which was the stupidest thing you could ever say considering) Now leafs fans have been his with a dose of relaity. Not only that, but im sure if you asked any of them they would prob still think they were making the playoffs and everything was ok.

The leafs suck, not being a fan of hockey, even i knew after the moves burke made that the team was going to be shit. They dont have an NHL team, they have a half ass OHL team at best right now. My problem with the club is that what ever burke does all the leafs fans just jizzz and think ya now we are sick, but in reality they arnt.

The guy has made little effort making the team stronger on the forward end, there is no leader, and there are so many defence men that even their defence is just complete shit. This leafs team is a team that is not going anywhere this year.....playoffs ha, they better watch out beucase the way I see it right now, if they finish this bad by the end of the year, well they just gave away their Frist round pick for a guy who couldent even play for almost half the season.

Go Raps Go

I find it hilarious year after year after year people expect the leafs to do well.

In the words of a comedian I saw a couple weeks ago talking about the leafs:

"Maple Leafs Foods has a better chance of winning the Stanley Cup."
