Raptors Raptors to use the stretch provision on Fields?

In that way, the Mavs and Lakers are similarly situated in their pursuit of Howard. Entering what is expected to be Kobe Bryant's final season, the Lakers have only one player, Steve Nash ($9.7 millon) on the books for 2014-15 -- and Nash, 39, would be a strong candidate to be released with the "stretch" provision in the 2011 CBA, which would spread his payments out to provide more room to add free agents.

(Incidentally, we'll probably see the first use of the stretch provision this summer, with Toronto's Landry Fields a leading candidate, league sources said.)

In which case he'd be on the books until 2018 for 2.5 mil a year.

I guess I could see it as a way to get under tax, if they don't want to use amnesty...

Otherwise, it seems much better to just keep him for 2 years and be done with it.

Signed after Amnesty was implemented, not allowed to be used on him IIRC.

why would you do that if your going to trade bargnani, they could work out a deal work they would receive nothing back talking about the raptors

having that landry expiring would be nice to have as a trade piece,

there is going to be teams who miss in free agency and will have a ton of cap room, one being dallas

they could work a three team deal that would send Bargnani to the clilppers, butler to dallas and allow the Raptors clear some cap space so they can sign guys they want in free agency if they choose to go that route

Who in their right mind would trade for Bargnani and not send us a contract?

teams whom can't attract free agent enough, and have cap space.
to me buttler, is a nie catch for barg, if they give us a 2nd rd with him.
a solid bench sf defender, that's always in need.

and stretch landry contract could mean we can give a full MLE ? DanH ?

His remaining 13mil would be stretched out over several years rather than the 2 remaining seasons. Which saves us about 4mil this coming season. In other words instead of 2yr/13 mil remaining it would be something like 5yrs/13mil

so, if we applied this stretch provision and then traded him would the contract still be 2.5mill until '18?

could make him easier to move. Longer years bad but salary good.

hopefully he'll play well and be a decent role-player at a decent price, even if it is till '18.

could help improving our bench if we go under the cap as jeff suggested.

I'm not sure how it all works long term or in trades.

Stretch provision

Both the 2005 and 2011 CBAs contain a so-called "stretch" provision regarding payment of guaranteed money to waived players and its effect on the salary cap.

Under the 2005 CBA, players and teams could alter the schedule of payments to waived players by mutual agreement. The remaining guaranteed salary was equally spread across the remaining years of the player's contract.[5]

The 2011 CBA dramatically changes this regimen. While contracts signed under the 2005 CBA remain under the original scheme, different rules apply to new contracts. When a team waives a player signed under the 2011 CBA, it can spread the remaining guaranteed salary (and its accompanying cap hit) over twice the remaining length of the contract, plus one year. According to Coon, "if a team has an underperforming player with one season remaining at $12 million, the team can waive him and stretch his salary across three seasons at $4 million per season."

No, stretch provision means that you cut him. And then he's on the books till 2018. But not at 6.5 a year but at 2.5. Which means that team payroll is lower right now.

But you'll suffer in the future a little bit, less cap space.

I mean if they don't want to use amnesty in general (on Kleiza or Bargnani).

I could see that Ujiri might want to keep amnesty for another year, just in case he can't trade Bargnani.

question to the cap specialist here :

if we strech landry contract and get buttler (lose near 3M next season in the process), and maybe amnesty Kleiza, what will be our situation really ?

would we have capspace to sign some FA, and a full MLE if we do ?

I doubt it. At the very least you hold onto him and hope he has a decent season and he becomes an expiring contract next summer.

They'd still be 4-5 mil over cap.

If they amnesty Bargs and stretch Fields, they do get under cap but only by a couple mil.

I think if they use the stretch provision this year, it will be because the team doesn't want to pay tax.

aren't we currently at 71mil? Wouldn't this put us around 62mil? What's the cap at this season?
