Default Raptors TV Matt Devlin, It was a long road to Toronto!

Quote:
When you hear the stories about how some people made it in their chosen careers, the formula for success is often the same. Never, ever, for any reason, give up on your dream.

Matt Devlin, Toronto Raptors play-by-play broadcaster didnít just luck into one of the handful of major league professional sports broadcasting jobs. He earned it with hard work, determination, and over-coming more than a few set-backs.
Toronto Raptors Matt Devlin: Never Give Up On A Dream

Recently I had a chance to interview Raptors TV play-by-play announcer Matt Devlin. He has a fascinating story.

If anyone wants to take a shot at getting one of the handful of professional play-by-play broadcast jobs out there, be prepared for a long hard journey.

And it wouldn't hurt to get some advice along the way.

Very cool to hear his story..I know a lot of people seem to dislike him, but when he's not displaying his usual 'homerism', as all team's announcers tend to do, he's very good IMO..And the fact TNT chose him for the playoffs last year documents that. I'd personally like to hear him call March Madness games for CBS -he's no Gus JOHNNSOONNNN!! but he has the ability to increase the intensity of a game. In addition, "PUNJABI" to this juncture, is the single greatest moment in Raps history.

Him and Joe Bowan are about as bad as it gets. People thought Swirsky was a homer, Joe Bowan beats him by a country mile.

Actually I believe he does a better job with TNT and NBA-TV than he does with the Raptors. I really like his NBA playoffs work.

With the Raptors, Jack & Leo tend to take him away from the game and they start discussing everything except what's happening on the floor.

But as Raptors TV play-by-play guys go, Devlin is one of the better ones.

Devlins TNT games are great, the calls he made with Turk, and the denver vs dallas series he had some great call there

I love Devlins calls, I think he brings the right mentality when comes to raptor games, 82 of htem and he remains fresh, brings levity, gets pumped when the raps do something, and when the games get tight his play by play gets better

how sweet it is

he will win the fans over eventually,

I guess I would have to watch a leafs game in order for me to sufficiently debunk that remark.

that's the thing about announcing that most of you dudes forget. the thing with swirsky, is that for much of his time here, as the conduit between him and the fans, his job was making shit shine. devlin's a great play by play guy when there's lots of good stuff happening, and i think, when you've got shit on the court, unless you're into schtick, then it's hard to keep fans interested. if this team plays well and wins, so will we in seeing that this guy can call a game with energy.
i like what i've seen from him so far. he's got some style and he isn't trying to create an institution of himself through schtick.
all the greats do it through style and niche carving, not catchy nicknames and shit.

I'm warming up to Devlin a bit, but overall I prefer Chuck and still enjoy his game calling from the Raptors Rewind broadcasts.

Devlin has really really grown on men.

I think Acie said it best. He's a comedic genious.

A comedic genius would infer that he's trying to be funny. He's a bafoon that constantly makes mistakes and has everyone laughing AT him. Big difference.

conjecture. pulling things out of the sky and calling birds, opinions, isn't fooling anyone.
