Raptors Raptors still might sign Julyan Stone

Quote:
After the initial contract fell through, Julyan Stone is still in discussions for the Toronto Raptors to honor their deal, with three other NBA teams emerging as a serious suitor, a league source told RealGM on Friday.

While a contract hasn’t been signed, Masai Ujiri and Stone’s representatives have maintained dialogue surrounding a potential deal for the free agent. At 6-foot-6, Stone is a tantalizing, natural point guard and has wanted to join a team that will give him opportunity to play significant minutes.

After agreeing to a two-year deal with the Raptors, Stone had suffered a medical setback, but he’s now fully healthy and able to pass any physical exam. The Raptors signed Dwight Buycks and D.J. Augustin behind Kyle Lowry, creating some difficulty in bringing back Stone.

Stone was undrafted out of UTEP in 2011, and the 24-year-old has averages of 1.7 points and 1.5 assists over 26 games in the NBA.

Meh don't care either way

Nba really needs a minor league system better than the d league
Imagine if the Raptors had the own secondary team?

Unless he plays at SG since he's 6'6"? Maybe we use the stretch provision on Fields after all?

WTF? What for? We already have 15 players for next year. If we sign him I think Lowry and maybe Fields are on their way out. I don't see the team trading DJ or Buycks and we don't need 4 point guards. Buycks signed with us to backup Lowry according to the article I posted before... I won't be surprised if DJ is gonna be our tank commander and Buycks as a backup and Stone....

I am assuming he is gone. Still puzzled why signing a 4th PG though. If that's the case I am certain one of our PG is oddly on the trading block.

he's 6'6" so they can play him at SG behind Ross and slide Fields to SF. But then we'd have 4 SF's..

Imo, I don't think so... "Stone is a 6’6” pass-first point guard who has the tools to man the floor at the point as well as at the two or the three spot in a pinch"

We are already trying to find minutes for Ross, and Stone isn't a good shooter to begin with, he is a pass-first PG.

AG isn't gonna play much. Amir can play C when they go small, same goes for TH. I am more puzzled why the 4th PG, if signed. Normally if you sign a 4th stringer it means one of the them will be dealt at one point.

to lock up a young potential prospect maybe? Pass-first 6'6 and good defender, whats not to like? All he needs is shooting, and that can be developed

Only reason this could possibly make any sense is an expected Lowry trade.

a lowry trade would make for a terrible PG trio then
this guy is basically an end of the bench player, so he's not going to be making any major contribution on a game to game basis, Masai is basically choosing to use his final roster spot on a PG/SG, its just a personal choice over selecting a big, although i would like 1 more big Masai probably doesn't see anything better at that position than this guy at PG, either way he's picking up like a 15th man on the roster so those guys are really expendable, they get picked up and dropped all the time with only half a thought
i can see the value in that, right now we have lowry, DJ, and buyck, so if lowry or DJ gets injured you're going to need this guy as a 3rd PG, and we all know lowry can be injury-prone, also buycks hasn't proven himself to be a useful 3rd PG yet anyways
and this guy can also play some spot minutes at SG where we really only have DD and Ross, Fields is mainly an SF

jeffb's roster looks about right
Lowry/Augustine/Buycks/Stone
Derozan/Ross/Stone
Gay/Novak/Fields?/Daye
Amir/TH/Acy
JV/Amir/TH/Gray

I still feel a Lowry trade is in the air. Stone is a pass-first PG, DJ can play major minutes if needed and if you remember Buycks signed here to be a back for Lowry. As a 3 PG he could have signed with few other teams who wanted him.
I am guessing a trade of Lowry+? will take place. I wanted to start the season with our current roster and make a push but if we signed him it makes me wonder. This guy is clearly a PG just because he has size he can play the SG but dude has to work on his shot, so probably not...
@Admiral - you can't really say that this end of the bench players get picked with half a thought. Sometimes it's better to leave an empty roster spot, since we don't really need the guy unless MU is planning something.

Consider Stone is the personal pet project for Masai. Its less harm to have one at a minimum than to waste 1st overall pick on an italian

Seems to me that if the team adds Stone, they could then trade any or all of KL/DD/Gay now and regardless what they get in return (thinking picks/prospects) the Raps would still be able to field a balanced team.

MU seems to be preparing for a major overhaul of the roster over the next few months - at the very minimum MU has positioned the team to pull the trigger at any moment without having players moving up to the starting 5 and playing out of position. Still think December for that decision though Stone might signal a before season trade. The roster is looking more Denver-esque with the versatility of the players.

All MU has to do now is sit back and wait for the right trades or at worse, wait out the 2 years. Excellent maneuvering on his part given the current fiscal and roster situation of the team - flexibility for several directions starting the moment Stone is brought on.

We're not moving 32mil in salary for prospects and picks.lol

You can do that for Lowry and maybe DD, but if we're trading Gay we're going to have to take back salary. And I think MU isn't the type to trade the three best players of the roster and not get much in return. If he wanted to do that Gay would be a Piston right now. He's going to want to maximize their value and get back more cap friendly contracts (players that fit) + picks.

Oh of course salary back. Thought that was assumed. As for Detroit, they offered just cap space, not what Masai wants, he should at least be able to get a good pick and a prospect for Gay.

The last line I agree, cause I said that
