Default Raptors Still Feel Joey Can Be A Major Player Here

It would appear as though that Raptors haven't given up all hope on Graham and believe he can still be a "major player" with Toronto.

It sounds like he'll be playing in summer league next week too. Doug mentions that we should know the summer league rosters anyday now too.

We still haven’t seen a roster (I expect that’ll be out there today sometime) but am told by Someone Who’d Know that it looks like Joey Graham will be out there, trying to do something to resurrect his game after spending most of last season at the end of the bench or the inactive list.

Graham’s the enigma, of course. Good Joey, Bad Joey and all that. No one has any real idea whether he can be a major contributor this year or not (I suspect history holds and it’s more “not”) but there are those in the organization who still think he can be a major player here and they’re giving him every opportunity to prove it.

Players playing in the Orlando Summer League (starts today) that are the same age as Joey Graham:

Andre Emmett
Justin Gray
Marco Killingsworth
Stephane Lasme
Kasib Powell
Yuta Tabuse
Donnell Taylor
B.J. Elder

The common theme here? Guys who don't play in the NBA.

The fact that he's playing in summer league for the 4th time (!), at age 26 (!!) tells you all you need to know about Joey Graham.

Joey has more skills than the players you mentionned. Problem with Joey is that he's a meathead. He's got all the skills, but he just doesn't know how to use it, but if he could ever figure it out, he would be a very solid player in this league for years.

A "major player" ? Joey?

I really like him a lot, I do, but he's not a major player. Unless I'm getting wrong what a "major player" actually is.

Exactly, he does have more skills.

Thats why he was a first round pick.

And that's why he's infinitely more dissapointing than any of the players listed above.

The only difference between them is Joey collects an NBA pay cheque. I'm sure most of those guys could've filled in for Joeys 8 mpg in 38 games.

Oh, i never said Joey was a disappointment. He is. You never know what you're gonna get with him.

This is whay it's a good idea for him to go to summer league. If he gets some confidence back and finally gets a clue on how to play, positioning, using his skills, he could finally be a valuable member of this team. I'd rather have him than any other of the players you mentionned.

Again, play him at the 4 as an undersized PF and I think he'll actually do well. He's proven in the past that he can play the PF position adequately. I still think he can do it too.

He's already played 3 summer leagues and 3 full years of practices and games. Not to mention he was a 4 year college senior.

You think the 4th summer league go round is going to be his turning point?

Joey wasn't drafted to be a project or a slow developing guy. He was supposed to contribute and has had plenty of opportunities. To expect him to figure out how to play high quality basketball at age 26, when he's had every opportunity to figure it out already is overly optimistic.

If Joey can play spot minutes this year without being a total detriment to the team, then I'll be more than happy with him. I'd like to see him play more 4 than 3 as well, considering we've got alot more depth at the 3 spot, and Joey can be effective at the 4 against smaller defenders. (Smaller for the 4 spot, not smaller than him)

And I'd rather have Yuta Tabuse. For humour value if nothing else

Joey's a young, healthy, athletic guy who doesn’t play, ever. He probably watches more NBA than me. He’s signed though until the 09-10 season and I don’t see how he’s going to leave TO before then unless he’s traded. Even on a team where the coach is liable to make random lineup changes based on the advice of his Magic 8 Ball, he can’t find his way onto the court for any burn. And the few times he does, he stinks it up bad.

But for all the long nights on the bench and negative press, Joey keeps quiet. While lesser men might call out the coach, management, I respect Joey for not taking shots through the media. Not once. Not while angry, not ever.

And you’d think, being a blogger who masks his lack of X & O knowledge by latching on to controversy, quotes taken out of context, and links to puking kittens, that I’d be praying for Joey to lose his cool and call the coaching staff a bunch of Canuckleheads. And I did, for a while. You really don’t come across a freebie like that too often without Deshawn Stevenson on your team. But only now, approaching a full season of Joey-less basketball, can I appreciate the loyalty and restraint that comes with Joey Graham. Because let’s face it, he doesn’t bring anything else to the table.

So although you guys have completely written him off by now, let’s take a second to commend the guy for being a professional about it. Joey played more than 16 minutes a game only twice this season and has been a healthy scratch for 50+ games.

the main reason we dont hear a peep outta Joey is because even Joey thinks he's shit.
he knows he doesnt have the skills to warrant any playing time, he knows he's crap and has zero confidence in himself... thats why he doesnt say a word.
i wish he would say something, maybe get a little backbone. the guy will rot here and will continue to get shit on his entire career. he expects to get playing time, yet he continues to fly under the radar, keep quiet and just fade into existence.... yeah, thats working.

Joey Graham doesn't seem to have the drive and determination to improve. With his athletic ability he should be a good player by now in this league but he doesn't seem to add anything new to his game. He's basically the same player he was three years ago. That's probably all he'll ever be.An inconsistent guy off the bench who at some point will have played for 8 teams and just doesn't seem to fit in anywhere and retires at age 33/34 or goes over to Europe to play with Hoffa.

Could you elaborate that a little more?

Alright first off all, that is a pretty damn hard question because I bet you can't find one guy here who could name EVERY SINGLE 11th man of the league.

Second of all, who knows? Maybe there are 7-8 who do, do we really know the answer?

Third of all, I don't understand what you're trying to prove here. I was just saying how I think Joey deserves more respect and you're trying to point out something that's not worth, or doesn't mean anything.

Im saying Joey deserves no more respect than any other 11th man in the league.

And if there are 7 or 8 who do complain, and we dont know about it, how do you even know Joey doesnt complain?

Oh my god man. What are you trying to prove right now? That 11th men never complain? Fine I'll give you that. I don't even care because that's not even what i'm trying to prove anyway. That post I made at 12:09PM today had barely ANYTHING to do with what I was trying to prove about Joey. I just added it it because it came to my mind, thats all. All I wanted to say is that he's a great guy and player and doesn't deserve all the garbage that some people here are giving him.
