Default Raptors Source: "We need to convince Bosh to stay."

The subtext, of course, is the looming pressure of Chris Bosh's free agency. Yes, it's a season and a half away. No, the young star has probably not made a decision on whether he wants to stay, regardless of what is shouted by some U. S.-based commentators. But Bosh wants to win, and of all the potential maximum-contract superstars available in the summer of 2010 -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Dirk Nowitzki -- Bosh is the one playing for a losing team.

"There are about 16 or 17 teams that sign max players in 2010," one Raptors source said. "And there are only about five or six max players. LeBron and Wade aren't coming to Toronto. We need to convince [Bosh] to stay."

Bosh could force the issue as soon as next summer by informing the Raptors that he wants out. He seems too methodical and intelligent a thinker to have made up his mind so early in the process, but if Bosh decides to go, then at least the Raptors aren't locked into O'Neal at US$23-million next season. They will have options.

And so, the rebuilding of the Raptors starts again. If Marion still has long-lasting legs, this looks like a better team today. But then, he has played 27,000 minutes and another 65 playoff games in his 10-year career, and as one long-time Suns watcher put it a while back, "once his legs go, it's over." Colangelo has been trying to find the right combination to turn this team into a contender, and it hasn't happened yet. This is the latest turn of the dial.

Of course, this won't look nearly so appealing if, say, Miami uses its huge amount of salary-cap space in 2010 to lure Bosh to play beside Wade in the sunshine. But there's plenty of hardwood between here and there, so let's not worry about it just yet.

I still believe Chris wants to be the man wherever he plays to an extent. Yes he wants to win and if this team makes no gains between now and the end of next year I can see him leaving, but I'm really not sure he wants to go somewhere and be the number 2 guy....at least by a wide margin, a la Lebron or Dwade. I'm more worried Orlando clears enough room to make a run at him than anything, but i still beleive if BC can put some pieces in place and get this team to 2nd round next year he would stay and be the man. He's not at that age where the clock is winding down on his championship chances..he's still just a kid.

That said, if he goes...we rebuild with a few nice pieces and life goes on. I hope that doesn't happen..i enjoy watching Chris play for my team but it's not the end of the world...happens all the time

Nope, I mean outside of Miami (who could potentially get both Wade & Bosh) all the other teams that will likely have cap space aren't anything to brag about, so Chris goes from one average team to another one or worse.

So, I guess we'll see now bad he actually wants out of Toronto.

Given the current economic turmoil, I expect Bosh will accept our "max deal" ($133M/6yrs).

you can't go over the cap to sign players for whom you do not have the bird rights. it would have to be a trade.

I thought a MAX deal was 25% of the cap, so it depends on what the cap is in 2010

I think veteran players (more than 7 yrs) can start at 30% of the cap. And they can have 8% increases every year, and can sign for 6 years here.

and miami will be bankrupt by then, given that they have no fans and even teams that are playing well (like orlando) need to borrow money to survive these days. Next season will be a disaster compared to this season, and already many teams are losing lots of money.

I can see everyone re signing except LBJ b/c he'll want the attention. I think the other players/agents know the cap isn't going to raise and most of the big names are already the stars of their teams.

Mike Redd
Tyson Chandler
Josh Howard
Tracy McGrady
LBJ

will be the biggest names of the 2010 market

I think "need" is the wrong choice of word; "should" would probably be more appropriate. I still don't think Chris is deserving of a max contract, and I think BC will severely hamper his ability to build this team if Chris Bosh signs a max deal.

So far LBJ is the only one that said he'll even think of signing an extention but who knows. Talk is cheap

He wants to be Jordan so badly, so of course he will sign again with the cavs.
he wants a legacy, not tainted by going to the money boat knicks.
