Raptors should try to get Canadian players

So yeah this is kind of an old discussion but when the Cavs came into T.O. recently and Thompson and Bennett played in front of their families I started thinking again: now is the time to try and get some players with good Canadian ties.

Gone are the days when if you wanted a Canadian on your team you had to settle for Denham Brown. There's real talent in the league now, most of them are rotting away on opponent's benches, and there are more and more players entering the draft: we should get in on it!

A lot of Canadians could be had next summer, and for decent prices me thinks. Here's a short list of Canadians currently in the league. I'm sure you guys have an even better/more complete overview of which Canadians are still out there and are who are entering the draft soon.

- Joel Anthony: Doesn't appear to be a part of the Celtics rebuild, too bad he's an undersized C.
- Anthony Bennett: Cavs are a mess, how big is their faith in Bennett?
- Samuel Dalembert: Could be a nice backup behind Val!
- Cory Joseph: 3rd PG behind Parker/Mills, could he backup Lowry?
- Steve Nash: Lakers won't get anything out of him, maybe we could...
- Andrew Nicholson: In and out of the dog house in Orlando
- Kelly Olynyk: Is he part of the Celtics longterm plans?
- Robert Sacre: Another potential backup for Val
- Tristan Thompson: You never know if/when the Cavs might blow it up...

- Myck Kabongo: Whatever happened to this guy? Is he worse than Stone or Buycks??

What do you guys think?

i think it would be great to have a canadian or two on the roster. There's something about people coming from a certain area and then playing for a team. It *should* mean more to them. Kind of like when Quebecers play for the Montreal Canadiens.

Of course i wuold love it if the team was completely made up of Gypsies too.

100% Agree. Give me players that play hard on both sides of the ball and are team players. People need to stop with the "we are Canada's only NBA basketball team and we need a Canadian on it."

And there are no Canadian players that possess those talents? I agree, there was a time when they were hard to find, but those days are over. Cory Joseph plays on an excellent team, so he must be worth something. But he doesn't play as much minutes as he probably should. Playing in front of "his own people" might give him a boost to become an even better player and a worthy rotation PG.

It was apparent from the Cavs game that Bennett's and Thompson's "homecoming" brought a little bit of extra excitement into the ACC. It was fun.

Honestly man, the only Canadian players you listed that interest me are:

Thompson (only if we move Amir or if he asks for too much money on his next contract)
Sammy D (has had attitude problems before and is a risk, though as long as you give him at least 15mins a game then he should be fine)
Olynk (even though I prefer C's to play under the rim and not be 3 point shooters, I'm still somewhat interested.)

After that nothing really interests me. Do not say Bennett because he has proven absolutely nothing in this league. Nash is garbage and the rest of the guys you mentioned I only see as 3rd stringers. Joesph could become a 2nd string PG, but to me he still makes too many bonehead mistakes. He was the 2nd string PG for the Spurs last season (especially in the playoffs), now this year he gets beat out by Mills, who was their 3rd stringer last year.

I couldn't care less where our players are from. It would be nice to have some Canadian players on the team but only if they are useful and if we're not mortgaging our team just to have them on it. Realistically only Tristan Thompson, Kelly Olynyk, or Dalembert would provide any type of impact on this team. The rest have proved nothing to be impact their team on a regular basis or is named Steve Nash is looks like he should retire. I don't want another Magloire situation here where we got him just cuz he wanted to play for a Canadian team.

this talent infusion will ensure that in 7+ years, there will be a crop of stars and superstars that are actually willing (even prefer) coming to TO. Imagine in 7 years, if wiggins becomes a durant/lebron type of a guy and he's a FA and we have max cap space

What we should root for is for KD to be drafted by a shitty (management wise) franchise, because if he has success wherever he goes, it's very unlikely he will bolt. Too bad NYK can't draft him

It would be nice but it's not necessary.

Regarding TT and AB as they're constantly brought up. TT is going to demand 8-10 million/year which I really don't want to see this team give him that. AB - I don't think the Cavs will give up on him after just one season.

Great though that in the future Canadian bigs will actually have to tryout for the national team and not just walk into the team cuz they're in the NBA as there will be even more NBA Canadian bigs.

If there's one who's in the 18 - 20 ish range this draft who actually fits with this team as either BPA or team need (or both) then sure.

If that was referring to Wiggins - practically no team will give him up (whoever drafts him).

Thompson would be a good addition, but the price tag (trade and contract) likely will be too high.

Andrew Nicholson might be worth a look. His value is pretty low, but he could learn quite a bit behind Amir. For Nicholson to stay in the league, he's going to have to become an Amir-like player.

too many distractions for local guys, and it doesn't matter where they are from, just whether they commit to being here. i want good players. i don't care if they are green or from antarctica.

Indeed.

I see him having to become more of a Carl Landry type of guy. His strength being more offensively than defensively. But yeah, I get what you are saying.

The only Canadian player I want is Tyler Ennis and I want him here badly.

Kelly Olynyk would be a nice piece.
