As much as the list in fact reflects a lot of things that are pretty likely to go better than last season, it is really going to come down to this squad gaining a solid defensive identity. That has been communicated by everyone, so committing to that should not be an issue. With that in place a fair bit can go wrong and they will still have a shot at the playoffs. If a fair bit goes right they will surprise a lot of people.

So my optimism is ultimately based on one assumption, and considering the team should be working as one towards fulfilling that assumption, it's more than a reasonable assumption.

i think it's true that the east has gotten more competitive. boston and milwaukee mightve fallen out of the playoff race but detroit, cleveland, washington and toronto will all be fighting for the 6-8 seeds. health will be huge factor in whether we make it.

and if thats the ceiling, im not sure this is a core that ujiri and leiweke will want to keep together.

IMO our current roster can make the 5th-6th seed - best case scenario. Realistically I think we are more like 7th-9th. I don't think tanking is an option at all, but I can see a blockbuster deal taking place to break the core and bring back some young players, picks and expiring contracts.

The move you suggested would be a pretty clear sign of a tank.

Sort of, but to me tanking is when you clearly start the season with a talentless roster and the intention to suck badly with better chances for a higher draft pick in mind. Another sign of tanking is trading for some expiring contracts to clear up cap for the following season. Our case it very different, we have some good pieces and we are not bad enough to tank this way. MU most likely will decide after 20-25 games what it the right approach.

1) One Raptor will be an All Star (DeRozan or Valanciunas)
2) Lowry will be traded before the deadline
3) Casey gets fired after the season.

Gay has the best shot of being an allstar

If Gay has an all-star season, then DeRozan will be traded, and the team will try and keep Gay and Lowry. DerRozan isn't an all-star, now or in the future.

Why are people obsessed about throwing our assets away. First of all, Derozan is not paid like an all-star. He gets 9.5 million annually, and averages around 16-18 points, and one of the few players on the team that get to the line consistently. Remember the Vince years, when he was the only threat, and his body (knee) broke down. The go-to players need help, and Derozan is a good supporting player for Gay and Jonas.

im seeing a lot of posts not just yours about this (throwing away/wasting assets), why do you think we're throwing them away? last time I checked trading meant you get something of value back

The team has invested four years in Derozan. Do we need another draft pick or young prospect to invest several years and hope he can give you the same output Derozan already does. The team won 23 games in the 2011-2012 season, and obtained Terrance Ross. I haven't given up on Terrance Ross, but I'd be very happy if he gives the same numbers Derozan does.

what? how do you know we won't get someone for derozan who'll contribute just as good or better? I don't think anyone is dumb enough to trade derozan just to let ross start

If they trade DD, and it's a big if, they will get value in return no doubt.
The goal of course is not to let players walk away at the end of their contract. Lowry has one year left, Gay has a player option that he may or may not pick up, most likely will pick up, but I digress. If both or one of them might walk away at the end of the season a trade will take place. Also, based on their performance too. We know what kind of player Gay is, Lowry is more of a wildcard, so they will take all into account and see who stays and who goes. So far DD has been solid. So I am assuming DD will stay, Gay picks up his hefty PO and Lowry will be traded.

Gay is better overall than DeRozan at the moment, but the All Star selection format is changing. I think DD has slightly a better chance of making it as a "backcourt" pick than Gay,who'll likely be placed in the "frontcourt" category.

Sure.
Wade & Rose will get voted in,after that there 3 or 4 spots up for grabs. If the Raptors are in the playoffs around selection time,DeRozan may be able to sneak in if he's having a career year. Kinda like how Jrue Holiday did with the. Sixers last season

For the Frontcourt now,Gay is competing against

Garnett,Pierce,Lopez,Chandler,Anthony,Green(that's the Atlantic Division alone)
Noah,Deng,George,Hibbert,West,Monroe,James,Bosh,Sm ith,Horford....and that's just off the top of my head and not including the unknown like Bynum,Drummond,Harris,Valanciunas,etc...

It'll be tough for both but on paper it looks like DeRozan's competition is a little bit easier.

Irving, Wall, Dwill, Rondo.

Gay has more tools to have a career year. I'll stand with my precious statement, that DD isn't an all-star and won't be one, now or in the future.

problem with demar is that there, short of injuries, there are 6 spots that are locked, rose, irving, wall, wade, deron and rondo. Since guards only get about 5 spots, two sure things have to get big injuries. And that's not even counting players who have just as good a shot as demar, such as beal, jennings and a number of others.

gay has a better shot imo, outside lebron, george and possibly carmelo, I don't see any other locked spots among forwards. Lots of solid candidates, but none that are clearly ahead of him. A career year from gay and a good record from the team would almost guarantee he gets picked, since coaches like to reward guys from winning teams (which is why Bosh was picked in his first 1-2 seasons and last 1-2 seasons).

RG has a better chance of being an all star because of the wealth of good PGs in the NBA atm. #done
