Default Raptors Scouting Brandon Jennings

The former Oak Hill Academy (Va.) star has had dramatically up and down minutes, went through a coaching change, and plays in a primarily half-court set for a talented veteran team capable of competing for the Italian Series A League title.

Jennings is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.5 rebounds, and is shooting 23.1 percent on 3-pointers through 41 games (16 Euroleague).

While his statistics aren't stellar, he is a teenager playing against grown men, and he is improving quickly against competition better than he would face in Division 1 college basketball and getting more time to work on his game. With that in mind, NBA personnel have been taking the long flight to scout the projected top 10 pick.

"A lot of NBA teams are here now," said Jennings. "The Warriors were here for a couple of days. The Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors were here. A lot of NBA scouts are starting to come over.

"Now I really have to finish strong and try to give them just a little taste of what I got.

"Of course I think I'm ready. The NBA is an open game. It's more one-on-one. It's more free play. Out here, it's not so much free play. If I can get on a team that goes up and down, the sky is the limit."

I remember reading somewhere that Jennings isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. But hey, if he can produce then who cares.

I'd rather have Roko. That guy can't shoot... 23% from three?? Isn't the European 3 pt. line 1 meter closer than the NBA's?

Even if it isnt.. that's a bad %. I think we should be counsidering 2's and 3's and not so much PG's (Roko/Douby/AP will be OK next year for backups)

I want a shooting guard. I also doubt that we are going to get Jennings but we are just scouting to see what he can do. WE NEED A SG BC

what if BC trades Caldy for an SG?

think of Jennings as a left handed Tony Parker
both quick and can get to the basket but don't have much of an outside shot
remember Caldy wasn't a great shooter when he entered the league and TP barely took 3's, but they improved

and he has a high Bball IQ, so he is bright, on the court
and he's learned to be more team oriented in Europe instead of being the only option

Roko shot 17% from 3 this season.

LOL that's what I meant... neither of those guys can shoot... so I'd rather have a guy 3 inches taller with NBA experience already. ++ isn't the european 3 one meter closer?

I'm sure the Raptors are scouting a lot of players. It doesn't mean they'll pick the guy.
They have to do their due diligence on all the players in the draft regardless of position.
What happens when you don't? Rafael Araujo that's what.

This is only if we get atleast the 7th pick, right? I don't want to be wasting I high draft pick on someone other than a shooting guard

Some of you kids don't have a damn clue. If Jennings is there when we draft, I'd snatch him up in a heartbeat. In a draft like this, you don't draft for need. We dont have that luxury. You draft the best player available.

No one is disputing that. But is he really the best player available? It's hard to gauge his skill when he's playing less minutes, against a different level of competition, in a completely different style of basketball.

The level of competition between Europe and the collegiate level is different. In Europe, you're playing against grown men, seasoned vets, this is their livlihood. In US collegiate basketball, you're essentially playing against other kids. If he's there at 7,8,9 - wherever we pick, it should take 10 seconds to get the pick in. For being a 18-year old, having to adjust to different style of play and a differently cutlure, he's doing an admirable job.

EDIT: I've seen him play a couple of times on Raptors TV this year, and while he's not a good shooter, he's pretty damn quick and has pretty good court vision. I'd say he's like Rondo, but without the rebounding abilities and better recognition on the floor, better passer.

If hes available at 9, we take him, but Im not too high on the kid. He reminds me more of Lou Williams than anyone else right now.

I could see him going top 5 though with his athleticism. Maybe #4 behind Griffin, Rubio, and Thabeet.
