Raptors Raptors Republic: Raptors hope Gay declines his option next summer

Not sure where they're getting this from? Makes sense though...

Quote:
Essentially, next year is a throwaway year where the goal is to make the playoffs in a risk-free manner, i.e., do it in a way where future financial resources are not committed, while pleasing fans in the interim. The Raptors are hoping, and I have this on good account, that Rudy Gay does not pick up his option next summer giving them close to $30M in cap space. This is the flexibility the Raptors are seeking so they can dive into the trade and free-agent pool of 2014 which includes Greg Monroe, Avery Bradley, Paul George, Zach Randolph, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James (only mentioning for completeness), and others.

As Raptors fans, we better hope that Rudy Gay has a year where he’s inclined to pass on the $19.3M deal that he’s owed in 2013-14 in favor of a long-term deal that pays him more on aggregate. I’m thinking if the Raptors had their way, every play next season would be for Rudy Gay. It’s all about cleaning up the mess that Bryan Colangelo has left behind by pressing the ‘reset’ button, only that the button takes a full year to press. This is hardly tanking, and I firmly believe that the Raptors are aiming to make the playoffs, if for no other reason than for the brief rejuvenation that would bring and the ever-so-slight validation it would provide for Masai Ujiri and Tim Leiweke.

D.J Augustin and Austin Daye are unlikely to ever take you to a championship level, but what they enable the Raptors to do is connect the dots to next summer. That’s when Ujiri for the first time will have the flexibility he desires along with the associated accountability. The standard in Toronto has been set so low that all Ujiri has to do is give a marginal NBA player a non-guaranteed year and he’s considered a genius. He’s racking up tons of goodwill early in his second stint with the Raptors while playing on the sub-text of fixing Colangelo’s errors, and that should last him all of next season. Next summer is when we go beyond table stakes, assuming Gay plays nice.

Would that not validate Colangelo more?

+1

Same starting 5 + same HC + playoffs= Colangelo getting most of the credit (realistically)

But we all know that wouldn't happen.

The only way I can see it otherwise, is if people spin it as the result of the Bargnani deal and assume that Colangelo wasn't going to move Bargnani this year. I was expecting a Bargnani deal no matter who held the GM position. I would have expected Colangelo's future to be contigent on that trade getting done.

I noted this on their blog, but in no way would that open up 30M in cap space.

If Gay walks away, and you let Lowry walk, and you renounce your rights to Gray and Augustin, and you waive Q-Rich and Hansbrough and Daye and Acy and Buycks, and the cap goes up to 61 M, then you could have 24.3 M in cap space, with only Fields, DD, Amir, Novak, JV and Ross signed. Waiving Amir could put you at 25.8M.

Assuming you keep Hansbrough, Daye, Acy, Buycks as good role players on cheap deals, and don't waive Amir because that would be stupid, you're looking at about 18.2 M in cap space.

To just hope for Gay to walk away sounds kind of anti-Ujiri. That was the opposite of his m.o. in Denver. If he doesn't want to re-sign Gay, I could see a trade. I could also see an extension or new contract and then a trade at a later date a la Nene or Afflalo. Just hoping that Gay goes away would surprise me.

I guess in this case we will need to take some bad contracts and to find a GM who is willing to take a 1 year rental in case he walks away.

did you read the post?

to get that cap space, we'd have to waive almost everybody, basically our team would be demar + JV + Amir + Ross on the roster is a good team?
No max level free agent would even consider joining such a crew and even if we got somebody like Bosh for example, we'd still need a starting level PG and an entire bench. And you'd have no MLE since you are under the cap.

I said good! Adequate. If we won 40 games that would be a win for me. The first 2 seasons I watched of the Raptors just won 40 games.

Agreed. Every part of this article or blog is just plain idiotic including that fact if rudy leaves it clears 30 mil of cap space. Who writes this shit?
