Default Raptors Report: Like a Bad Penny, Carter Keeps Coming Back

Just one infamous ex-Raptor.

It’s Orlando bringing in Vince Carter, keeping the one player I unlike more then any other still relevant. He’s moved to another good team, one that Raptors will be competing against for a playoff spot.

And it’s gives him ample opportunity to try and decimate the Raptors again and again.

A long time ago, I had a fling with Vince. He was the slam-dunk champion, the high-flying star of a good young Raptors team that seemed to be going places – they narrowly lost to the 76ers and Pistons in consecutive playoff runs.

And as every Raptor fan knows, Carter puttered around for a couple seasons, eventually being traded for pennies on the dollar in December of 2004, to New Jersey, where he almost immediately became a thorn in the side of the Raptors.

When did he turn on Toronto for good?

Was it on Friday, April 15, 2005, Carter returned to the ACC for the first time as a Net? Despite a chorus of boos (the AP recap of the game suggests it was worse then anything any ex-Raptor had ever received), Carter lit up for 39 points and nine rebounds, leading the Nets to a 101-90 victory.

Or was it sooner then that? Was it on May 20, 2001 – game seven of the 2001 Semifinals against Philadelphia. In the morning of the biggest game of his career up to that point (and maybe even now), Carter attended a graduation ceremony and flew to Philly for the game seven.

It’s been asked why enough times that it’ll follow him the rest of his career and no answer will ultimately matter.

Or was it after, from all the flak that Carter has taken for that day?

Since being traded, Carter saved his best stuff for Toronto, usually in Toronto, where he seems to feed off the crowd’s hate of him. Remember the 2007 playoffs? When Carter led a Nets team past the Raptors in six?

In the pivotal game four, he scored 37 and helped Jason Kidd pick up 19 assists. Or game one when the Nets wore their red alternate uniforms on the same day Toronto gave out red t-shirts to all their fans to celebrate the division championship; was that Carter’s call? Was that another shot at the fans in Toronto?

His singular assault on Toronto has continued as the seasons went by. In 2008-09, Carter averaged the following: about 21 points, five assists and five rebounds a game (usually in about 38 minutes). But take a look at one of his line scores against Toronto:

* 11/21/08: 39 pts, 6 assists, 9 rebounds

His 39 points were the most he’d score in a game that month and one of his highest totals of the season (his highest: 41 against the hapless LA Clippers). He took 28 shots, nearly double what he’d average that season. And he capped the game off with a reverse jam, to boot.

For another angle, look at his line score from the December 12, 2008 game against Toronto. In foul trouble, Carter only played 29 minutes and was held to three points. But in the following games:

* 39 points @Chicago on 12/13/08
* 20 points, 10 rebounds @Toronto on 12/15
* 32 points against Utah on 12/17
* 34 points and 10 rebounds against Dallas on 12/19

In other words, he followed up a subpar performance against Toronto with four great ones, three against playoff-bound teams (and a double-double against Toronto, in Toronto).

But his sticking-it-to-the-Raptors doesn’t limit itself to the stat sheet: take his recent trade to Orlando; they’re only other team to beat Toronto in the playoffs in the past few seasons.

He’s jumping from one burr to another; as the Nets slid into irrelevance, Carter jumped to a relevant team, one that will be gunning for Toronto this season.

Is it just me, or does Carter just keep coming back?

When someone/something is always on your mind, it will tend to seem like it keeps coming back. What Carter is to Raptors fans is a good example.

He still averages 20+ per game and seeing as he only plays the Raptors at most four times a season, I'd say he tries hard against other teams too.

The one thing i want to know is what's going on in Carter's head when he plays the Raps. The way he exited town was so unprofessional, so juvenile, that I find it truly hard to believe that he would feel the booing is unmerited...

I mean... sure we dont like him, but its not like we dont have our reasons.
I dono, i just don't understand his relationship with the city... I'd love for a reporter to ask him if he could ever see himself playing for Toronto again. I'm sure his answer would be interesting.

If Orlando is gunning for Toronto then it's all good to me.

We should still boo Vince Carter. We have a right to do it. It is not our problem he has some "anger" issues towards the Raptors as we have towards him. He is very talented but he really turns it on against the Raptors. Sad, sad story for Vince Carter. Could have been one of the elite shooting guards.

cmon guys, its true he ditched the raptors, but cmon. We were really BAD, so its not really his fault. I know him and his mother caused a lot of controversy but he was a Franchise guy. With out him we would of not even reached the second round. He helped the community SO MUCH. He built us a Basketball court, his chariti help was funomanel and he was overall a good guy. I still have his autograph jersey, and a photo.
