Default Raptors Pursuing Wilson Chandler

"Sources close to the process say the Raptors plan to make life hard on the Denver Nuggets with regards to restricted free agent Wilson Chandler. Wilson is waiting for his clearance from China after dominating in the CBA."

NBA AM: Who Is Available In Trade? | HOOPSWORLD | Basketball News & NBA Rumors

I really like Wilson Chandler's game and I'm hoping he can be our small forward of the future if we sign him to a long term contract !

Article also says that the raps are shopping for draft pics!

YES.

Question is how much do we throw at him without the Nuggets matching? 9 million?

I think it'll be easier to sign him now that Denver is playing so well. They might not want to tinker with their chemistry too much...

Rest of the article:

Quote:
Sources say that Jose Calderon and Leandro Barbosa could be moved to land a traded player exception or smaller assets to swap with Denver in a sign and trade.

The Nuggets say they will re-sign Wilson, but with the dollars committed to Nene, Arron Afflalo and now Danilo Gallinari – Toronto may put a number on the table via a sign and trade offer that makes re-signing Chandler in Denver tough.

Denver holds the power as Wilson is a restricted free agent, but Toronto has eyes for Wilson and seems willing to pony up the dollars. They’d still need a deal, but once one team puts a crazy number on the table that’s how prices get set.

A starting small forward still sits at the top of the Raptor’s wish list, and it seems Calderon and LB are the chips they will cash to get one, so keep that in mind as other names start to shake loose.
I would definitely trade Leandro away if we landed Chandler, but if we trade away Jose we're left with Jerryd and Anthony Carter as our point guards. Yikes...

Would love to have him here if he is properly motivated.

I know for a fact that Wilson wants to return to New York, his hearts always been in New York, he didn't like the fact they traded him, but he is more than happy in making a return to NY.

Yeah this is actually the perfect timing for Chandler to decide to come back, with him and Gallinari playing very similar roles, I doubt Denver would want to extend an 8-9 million dollar offer for him. I think this could even be a bargain since it is a for a big athletic player who can defend well (from what I've seen) and hit the 3 pointer on a fairly consistent basis, while also filling a need at the 3 spot.

And as for Wilson to returning back to New York, It would make sense but they've got such a huge payroll that he would have to take a really small contract, compared to what we could offer him.

Hmm... Can one of WC fans please explain to me why he'd be an upgrade over Kleiza or JJ?

He'd also have to agree to play back-up for Carmelo, where as we could offer him a starting role and a larger contract...

...not to mention our cannabis laws...

Chandler would be a very nice addition to the Raptors - long, agile SF that can defend and score. He and Johnson would be a nice 1-2 combo at SF.

I'd deal both Calderon and Barbosa if it meant getting 2012 first-round picks in return. The team could land three core pieces in this year's draft.

In his first game with his Chinese club he scored 43 points and grabbed 22 rebounds.

Is that enough to persuade you?

I see Wilson as basically a slightly quicker JJ with better ball handling and a considerably better jump shot. As for Kleiza, he's been really inconsistent, but could still carve out a role as full time back up sf and pf.

...Also that debut was filthy!

Kleiza is a tweener, where he doesn't have a true position. Chandler is a better defender than Kleiza but he can also score. He doesn't, however, have quite the offensive repertoire that Kleiza has.

Chandler is a much better offensive player than Johnson while providing comparable defence. Johnson is by far the better shot blocker, but both are very good one-on-one defenders.

My mom could drop 20/10 on some of those chinese clubs

Seriously though as far as Wilson and Kleiza are concerned there is no comparison. Wilson is more mobile, more athletic, a better rebounder, better shooter, more skilled, better defender, etc. etc.

Hmm... I will put the stats from Chinese league aside for a moment.

All I was trying to say is that we have affordable options at SF at the moment who could be improved upon by a more expensive player, but that would make sense only if that player is a rather significant improvement.

How much do you think Chandler will command as an RFA? More importantly, how much would you pay to get him?

He's just as rugged and just as big, but more athletic than Kleiza and more skilled than JJ. He's also a very adequate defender and can play the 2,3 or 4.

While we're at it let's sign JR to replace Barbosa.

Are you trying to cause tensions between China and Canada? What are we going to buy at Zeller's and Wal-Mart?
