Not sure what ESPN can say right now with their pre-season predictions... and it's too soon to get giddy about it.. but right now. Toronto has the 8th position. To be honest, I think we're going to finish higher than that, when the years done. (maybe only 7th or 6th...)
But below is why I think we're going to beat the Nicks in the standings... from what I've observed so far this year... and also

...Why the Nicks can suck it... So New York has played 20 games so far... 15 of which have been against below .500 teams. The Raptors have played 19 games 11 of which have been against .500 teams... that's a difference of 3 games. How many are the Raptors behind the Nicks in the standings? 3 wins. hmm... ok your wondering about the quality of the wins... well lets put it this way.

How many + .500 teams has New York beat ? 2 teams.... Chicago and New Orleans that's it! Both teams are right in the middle of their respective conferences... Chicago barely has a winning record.
How many + .500 teams have the Raptors beat? 3 teams...Boston, Orlando, and Oklahoma City (okay not many more... but) ... 2 of the top teams in the enitre league and Oklahoma which until yesterday was tied with New Orleans. (middle of the pack.)

And that's the way it is...

Oh for those who are Miami (or Bosh haters)... here's some fun trivia... in the same vein...

Miami has played 20 games, 12 of which are against below . 500 the only above +.500 teams they've beat so far are phoenix and orlando. And to give New York credit, as with the raptors, at least the games they lost to above .500 teams they were in the games and could have won them. Miami... got obliterated in almost every +.500 team lose.

go ahead and discuss.... (or vent if you're a big Nicks fan. Hey I loved them in the Stark and Ewing days.... but to be honest... I've hated them ever since Isaih Thomas has been involved...) Though I love what D'Antoni is doing with the team, and they're becoming watchable again... I may change my NYN can suck it policy... pending continued steady play from them.

Higher then 8th?

Let's not lose our heads here. Unless BC makes some huge move 8th is best we can expect.

I don't know what to think anymore. Before the season i said 35+ wins, then tempered my expectations, and now i'm inclined to go back to 35+ wins. But getting more then eighth is expecting too much at this point, let's see where we are in a month after a fairly favourable December schedule. January is a brutal schedule with games vs Boston x2, Orlando, Miami, Chicago, SA, NO, Memphis, Atlanta.

I think 35 wins might be possible now (after seeing them play for 20 games) and it might be enough to go into the playoffs this year

6th is the best we can get.
When the Knicks start playing real teams again they'll start to fall back, and the Pacers aren't that good.

BC will be making a huge deal (at least in regards to monetary value) when he moves Peja + Extras but it will come down to what we really get back.

I think we can move Peja for another expiring, and hopefully an unproven young asset.

I can see 6th being the best position we can get. I still don't think Indy and NY are better than us and it will depend on BC before the trade deadline and how well those players integrate into our system.

The second half of the year is like a whole different season. The most talented teams crank up their effort and pull away from the crowd. Lesser teams are playing their best right now just to get a win at all.

I'm wondering what Colangelo will do now that were nicely together. Is it time for him to use the TPE we got for someone to get us to the next level or are we still in the developing stages?? I say 6th is the highest we can get right now

Patience is the key word right now for both BC and fans...although i'm enjoying the unexpected early success regarding the standings, this team is still a "work in progress"...i want this club to continue to get younger and better...not for this month or next, but for the next few years
use the TPE and expirings to do just that

i'm ok with moving 1 step forward, then a 2 steps back for this year and maybe even next
but under no circumstance should BC press the panic button and try to make a "big" move right now...this core (as it is right now) is not ready

About 6 or 7 months left on the TPE? Some other teams have the same thing though.

I think BC may be waiting until free agency to use the TPE, through a sign-and-trade.

Yeah, especially when some teams realize they stink and the owner demands a salary cut and maybe some other team might put together a foolish deal in hopes of knocking off the LAkers, Spurs, Celtics and Heat in the playoffs.

The heat's off Colangelo again right now so he can have patience. And for anyone that wants Colangelo gone, I think he's here to stay.

When we beat Boston and OKC they were missing Rondo and Durant, huge difference makers.
