Raptors to play exhibition games in Buffalo?

Quote:

An exhibition game or two? Maybe.

But will the Toronto Raptors play regular-season games in Buffalo? No chance.

“We're not thinking home games. No, no, no, no. We're not giving those up,” said Richard Peddie, president of Raptors owner Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. “We have our fan base here we want to service.”

Peddie was responding to a report in Wednesday's Buffalo News in which local officials and the News publisher suggested the Raptors could be looking to expand their presence in upstate New York by playing preseason and perhaps even regular-season games at HSBC Arena.

“They're very eager about having some of their games played in Buffalo,” New York Senator Charles E. Schumer said Tuesday.

Buffalo News publisher Stanford Lipsey said the Raptors are “very interested, and I would expect us to get a preseason game in 2009.”

How about regular-season games? Said Schumer: “I wouldn't say it's done, but I think it's on the table.”

To which one MLSE insider said in response: “He's at a table set for one.”

The Raptors have a history of moving their training camps to different markets and holding preseason games beyond the Air Canada Centre in an effort to expand the NBA team's footprint beyond the Greater Toronto Area.

The Raptors have previously held a training camp in the Buffalo area and, two seasons ago, played a preseason game in Rochester, N.Y.

“We're booked for this year and we're probably in the process of being booked for next year,” Peddie said. “We like to take those games coast to coast, but that being said that [Buffalo] is a market that has been good to us and if the arena is right and the economics work, we'd look at it.”

Hmmm...

Playing a game or 2 in Buffalo even regular season isnt such a bad idea, no way MLSE goes for it though.

I find it funny whenever that moron Peddie talks about servicing the fans. How this guy still has a job is beyond me.

Well seeing as Peddie is an idiot anything can happen to this organization.

And +1 to Aar Canada's post

They better not play Reg. season games in Buffalo! With the fanbase in Toronto, they deserve all 41 games to be played in Toronto.

I'd go watch them in Buffalo, then head on over the Anchor Bar for a couple of pops and some wings.

They could get the Tim Russert bump. Actually - I guess not.

I see what they are trying to do but i guess you can call me old school. Maybe its my british background (you support your local team in the local town they represent..ok ya ya, Hamilton doesn't have an NBA team so i took the closest NBA team :) ).

Toronto should ONLY play regular season games in Toronto and thats that. If they don't its a slap in the face to the city they represent.

If you want to play some preseason games elsewhere, fine but we wait ALL freakin year for games to go to.

I dont need to be inconvenienced at the border by some paranoid border guard whose ready to finger print me, take a sample of my DNA and then try to give me a cock meat sandwich lol.

Meh...they're giving Toronto some Bills games. Theres only 8 of those per year, they generate far more revenue individually, and it's the favourite sport of the fans in Buffalo.

I mean, it's not like they'd be getting the Leafs games or anything :haha:

I think having even up to 5 games a year in other cities is a GREAT idea. It's not like we have sellouts every game, until that happens, I think fans have no right to complain. Of course, it would be games that like Memphis on a Monday night and stuff like that, and if it ends up bringing more fans in the Raptors world - that can only be good.

I agree that the Raptor team should play for Raptor fans, but not necessarily Toronto fans only. There are fans to be had all across Canada, Europe and Northern NY, let's go for them.
