Raptors pickup next years option on Belinelli

No surprise here since BC is so high on him, and he comes so cheap.

October 29, 2009 - The Toronto Raptors announced Thursday they have exercised the fourth year team option on the Rookie Scale Contract of guard Marco Belinelli. Belinelli is now guaranteed through the 2010-11season. In accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, the Raptors had until October 31 to exercise their option on Belinelli. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal was not disclosed.

Belinelli had 10 points in 19 minutes in Wednesday’s season-opening win versus Cleveland.

The 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Belinelli averaged 8.9 points, 2.1 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 21.0 minutes in 42 games last season with Golden State. He registered four 20-point games during the 2008-09 campaign, including a career-high 27 points December 12, 2008 at Atlanta.

Through 76 career games Belinelli owns a .397 mark from three-point range (69-for-174). As a rookie he appeared in 33 games, averaging 2.9 points in 7.3 minutes.

Prior to joining the Warriors, the 23 year-old, 6-foot-5 guard from Bologna, Italy, played professionally in Italy for five seasons. In 33 games during the 2006-07 season with Fortitudo Bologna in Serie A, Belinelli averaged 16.4 points, while shooting .544 (99-for-182) from the field. In 13 Euroleague contests, he averaged 12.9 points on .438 (32-for-73) from the field.

And if he turns out to be our first swing-man off the bench next season - we could have done worse. Much worse.

Awesome. I love Belinelli!

While he had an absurd tendency to take frustrating fadeaways, when he's concentrating he is a SMART player on both ends of the court. He had a couple of nice steals in pre-season, and he made some nice plays in game 1 like that driving dunk that none of the Cav defenders expected.

I expect Marco to be a Raptor for a long while.

In the behind the draft show, the first thing BC says when Golden State picks Curry is that Beli was available.

Last year's 2 guard took alot more fadeaways... Bellinelli is a clear upgrade over Parker. More aggressive, more swagger. Much needed at that position.

And more creative. That one quick pass to Turk yesterday and the no look pass to Rasho were sweet.

Devean George has yet to play one second this season due to a few things, mainly he sucks and a knee injury. This trade was highway robbery, and it's not even funny. It makes me wonder if Nellie owed BC a favor for something? Clearly GS could have done better for Belinelli, a young player that can shoot the ball off the bench, no?

Like previously stated, Curry made Beli obsolete, he would have gotten no minutes.

I read an article after the trade (probably on here) talking about how GS's owner was trying to save $$$ and the George trade w/ cash means he saves $1.8m in contracts. It wasnt that he could have gotten more, it was that the Raptors were willing to save the Warriors $1.8million this year and to GS that was worth Belinelli. Still a shit trade from GS's perspective tho.

Yes, Jeff, it's definitely robbery. During another offseason, I think there might have been more competition to acquire Belli's services. As others have stated, this comes down to financial considerations. However, it also comes down to certain teams just not being able to justifiy picking him up since they can't find him minutes. Chicago desperately needs offense, but they went out and got Pargo before Belli was available. Washington might have been a good fit, but the Wiz acquired two depth players on draft day.Indiana could have used him, but they went out and got Earl Watson and Dahntay Jones. Charlotte needs offense, but they already have trouble getting Augustin enough minutes, so that wouldn't work. Plus, the Bobcats are in financial trouble. They wouldn't even shell out a couple of $mill for Iverson. Belli probably would have helped New Orleans, too. Again, a team in financial trouble. The Hornets were over the luxury tax threshold, so they'd need Golden state to accept a significant contract before they owner would let Belli come in. Hornets have little to offer GS. The Hornets gave away Rasual Butler just to save money. Dallas has Terry, Howard, and Kidd in the backcourt, so Belli wouldn't have fit there, even though Cuban had the cash to get him. Also, Donnie might have been sour on Belli after conversations with his Dad. I'm not sure if Dallas and GS will be doing business until Nellie is gone. Atlanta shelled out money in the off-season, but they picked up Crawford who is going to play loads of minutes backing the 1 and 2. Boston isn't shy about spending and was also looking for a combo guard to come off the bench, but they found Marquis Daniels, so you can't blame them for passing on Belli. New Jersey is currently rebuilding and in the habit of stock piling young talent, so one might think they would have had interest. Their ownership situation might be preventing them from doing anything other than simply shedding salary, at least until next summer. Most of the other teams I haven't mentioned simply don't need another shooting guard and weren't looking for one in the offseason. You might say "a team can never have enough young talent", which is true, but in this economic climate and with uncertainty about where the cap will be next year, some teams are thinking short term and doing anything to avoid massive financial losses.

Having said all that, there are a handful of teams whose decisions to pass on Bellinelli are questionable, in my opinion.

1-Clippers....they needed a wing and brought in Rasual Butler from the Hornets in exchange for a second round pick. Butler can play the 3, but other than that, I think Belli has more upside. Furthemore, Belli costs a third of what Butler is making. Given how cheap Sterling is, Belli becomes an even more desirable choice.

2-Memphis...spent all summer trying to woe Iverson when they could have added Belli. Unlike AI, Belli would have come off the bench and been happy with 20-25 minutes.

3-Minnesota...they really, really lack outside shooting. Brewer is terrible from the outside, although other aspects of his game have improved. Minnesota is so far below the cap next year that they could have afforded to take a risk on Belli. Plus, unlike New Jersey, Minnesota does not stand a realistic chance of acquring two big name free agents in 2010. They might land one, but I doubt they'll land two. And even if they land one, you need cheap talent to go with the fat salaries of Al Jefferson and the new FA. Belli's contract and abilities would fit that need.

First post.
My feeling on why other teams didn't pick Beli up on the radar last summer was because no one else was taking note of his play in Europe except Don Nelson and BC. And I think Nelson was either feeling incredibly generous with BC, or felt the need to do the right thing with Marco at that point (remember, he was scoring something like 20 pts a night, plus Nelson had the luxury of having Morrow take Beli's spot).

But, wow, that Marco would be BC's first response to GS's pick in the draft is just amazing to me. He never gave up on the guy...

We could actually really use a Devean George type player right now, a defensive specialist backing up Turk. Gotta love Bellinelli though, his offensive skills probably outweigh what George would have been bringing to the table, and at least he's not a liability on D.
