Raptors Raptors not F@$*# around

Quote:
Give Bryan Colangelo and the Toronto Raptors franchise some credit - after a miserably disappointing 2008-’09 season, they appear determined to shake up and improve their roster by any means necessary, even if it means potentially taking on huge free agent contracts and/or dealing Chris Bosh.

Of all the NBA teams in the free agent market, it seems like the Raptors are the most active. A scan of this morning’s news and rumors has them reportedly preparing a 5-year, $60 million free agent offer to Hedo Turkoglu - a full $10 million more than what the Portland Trail Blazers supposedly put together for the same number of years.

It appears that whichever team loses out on Turkoglu will then be in prime position to sign Trevor Ariza for something in the mid-$30-$40 million range. Obviously, Ariza isn’t quite Hedo, but if he can consistently provide the energy, defense, and scoring pop that he did for the Lakers in the playoffs, he would be a huge asset for either team.

The Raptors were also allegedly in the mix to sign Charlie Villanueva, but now that he’s been wrapped up by Detroit, Toronto is reportedly interested in trying to steal Linas Kleiza. Linas is one of the most underrated free agents in this year’s pool and would be perfect in Toronto. He can shoot, play D, and brings scrap and toughness to the table - qualities all desperately needed in Toronto. It’s doubtful that Denver will let Kleiza go, but if Toronto makes an offer Denver can’t match, there’s not much the Nuggets can do about it.

Finally, it’s being reported this morning that the Raps are considering making an $8-$10 million offer to restricted free agent David Lee. If they’re suddenly willing to pay that kind of money for another forward, you have to think that something may be on the horizon with Chris Bosh. A trade in the works? Or just no plans to re-sign him at the end of next season?

No matter how this plays out for Toronto, if you’re a Raptors fan, you have to be pleased that your squad is in it to win it and not just floating along like a lot of other teams, content to be mediocre.

Update: Something's wrong with the link for some reason but i put up the whole article.

I like hearing this. BC is gonna improve this team.

Nope. I can't see MLSE approving of that.

Maybe if we're in contention at the end of the year, top half of the East maybe. As of right now I wouldn't say so.

this kind of shit really irritates me. if you were allowed to use that money for players and team improvements, then everyone would do it and it wouldn't give us any advantage anyways... the trick is knowing the rules and being creative with them, not complaining that cash that any team could acquire would help us in the pursuit of free agents that those other teams would also be trying to get.

the rules are there to level the playing field and to stop rich teams from accumulating too many assets. and it tends to work most of the time. take a look at the other north american pro leagues. the nba is in good shape by comparison, and that's because stern has done a great job with the league rules and the cba. he's not perfect, far from it, but compared to baseball and hockey, the nba is well managed, and it's rules like this that keep it that way. enough with the short-sighted bitching already.

only problem i have is with the refs... how could you properly ref a game if you favor star players?? just makes no sense, aside from gretzky it doesn't happen in hockey... but i know, hockey has their problems as well. On a side note, I think we should be pleased to have a GM like Colangelo, he's determined to show what he can do with a team, I don't know about you but I was stoked when we picked up J-O last year. That was a complete flop, we don't have a lame duck GM and that's a sweet thing.

ya, me to i was like woah this guy is only 30 and he does have a bum knee but, he seems determined and he is a former all-star and was on the olympic team. then during the season it was like yes we're 3-0 this looks like it was a good pck up. then it was downhill from there. with everyone getting injured and stuff. bryan's job was in jeopardy at one point and he knew it was so he fired sam. made a trade at the deadline and there was some promise through the second half of the season.

now, he's looking to show he was one of the best and still is.

Thank god we didn't pay 10 million for Turkoglu.

Thank god we didn't pay 8 million for Ariza.

Colangelo has shown some patience and I think it was probably the smartest move. Let the desperate teams overpay...we'll have plenty to work with.

um, ariza just got signed for 6, not 8. I think the more we wait with marion, the fewer options are left on the table.

The only unfortunate aspect of all those rumours (if they're true) is that BC looks schizophrenic. Is he looking to improve the wings? Does he want to upgrade up front. Does he want to trade Bosh. It seems like he has Plans A-Z, and which ever one works out best, he'll go with. The raps could either look like an improved version of last year's team, or completley different.

Which one is it going to be? Stay tuned folks....
