• You might not even notice that the Raptors have made some minor changes to their logos. But you'll definitely notice what's happening on March 21, when they plan to salute the Canadian military by wearing the NBA's first-ever camouflage uniform. Uni Watch is generally opposed to camo uniforms, in part because they look ridiculous and in part because they raise some difficult issues (if you're curious, there's a full discussion here), but Raptors ownership has a long history of military support -- COO Tom Anselmi has even visited Canadian troops in Afghanistan -- so this is obviously a sincere gesture, not a gimmick. Still, does anyone else think it's a bit weird to have a team of mostly American players wearing a uniform that honors another country's army?
We have mostly American players? Aren't we known for being Euro centric? Why not just point out that we have players from all over the world?

Seriously these uniforms are ugly. I appreciate the attempt to honour the veterans, but putting out a camouflage uniform is just trying to sell more jerseys. Mixed dress is not appropriate - ask any sergeant-major. In addition, our recent vets wore desert cam on deployment, not green.

The accepted short form of camouflage in the CF is 'cam', not 'camo'. But coolest of all is that this variant was designed in Canada and has since been licensed for use by all four US military services and the UK Ministry of Defence is also looking into it. It is known as CADPAT (CAnadian Disruptive PATtern) No doubt it is ugly, but it works. In the field, not on the basketball court.

Whats with all the hate? Its not becoming the official jersey. They are supporting the Canadian military by wearing the jersey for a game, in which case it is justified.

How does this support the military? It's a horribly empty gesture that could be interpreted any number of ways, including the idea that putting on military attire in itself denotes some kind of heroism. There are men in uniform from other places that we consider enemies, not heros. Our military stands apart from some in that it is under civilian control. I don't see how civilians playing basketball in military garb does anything but lend itself to working against such a worthy principal.

lx is absolutely right in his post. i'd also add that sports teams have no business getting involved in the celebration of war.

Come off it.

Yes they are celebrating war. There will be speeches before hand about how awesome war is.

Its that kind of jump of assumption that causes more harm than good.

ya, the jerseys are butt-ugly but it's for a very good cause
would like to see the organization auction them off at the end of the year and have the proceeds go to military families...would be nice if they donated 50% of any jersey sales to the families as well

in the end, i think this would have been a much classier way to go about it...take the regular Whites (or Reds)...put Canada across the front and this emblem on the back (instead of number)...get rid of chevrons

league probably wouldn't allow it, but this is the way i would have gone

Celebration of War? Somehow this doesn't feel like anything will be celebrated. We certainly won't be celebrating a win that night either.

i knew you would jump in on that one.

a national culture that connects its bread and circuses with its military commitments is precisely celebrating war. our government puts out an enormous amount of propaganda telling us to support things that we have no say in whatsoever. our private enterprise - and especially that aimed at entertainment - need not jump in.

this is the kind of bullshit message that does nothing but pull the wool over our collective eyes. support our troops by watching a basketball game??? please...

i'll also add this bit:

Quote:
1) TOO MUCH PATRIOTISM?

Is it time to dial back the patriotic festivities at sporting events? Commentator Frank Deford thinks so:

It's also true that in the United States sports games are more associated with the military and mass displays of patriotism than are other amusements. I've always wondered why it is SOP -- standard operating procedure -- for the national anthem to be performed at games, when no one would ever expect "The Star-Spangled Banner" to be played at the theater or the opera or a rock concert or at the start of the Academy Awards this Sunday.
Why is this strictly an athletic devotion?

And, now, at the start of major sporting events, it's also obligatory to have military jets flash overhead. The Olympics sends up doves; we send up fighter planes.

I can only hope that the mascot wears full gear and fires camoflouge tshirts from his tshirt cannon.

This represents another case of the Dr Strangelove scenario being completely reversed. In the film it is the civilans that get undermined by mad military leaders needing to compensate for small penises. Now good, responsible military leadership is constantly in danger of being undermined by civilian leaders, and civilians themselves, looking to feel sexy about militarism as if it is a game. And ultimately, those serving are not well supported with a strengthening of that sort of culture.
