Arrow Raptors need to add piece for playoff puzzle

Quote:
The more one watches the Raptors, the more one is convinced that the absolute best option for the team is to make a change prior to the Feb. 18 trade deadline.

Only then can the Raptors be taken as serious players in the post-season.

Given the many restrictions and limitations that exist in a climate of reduced revenues and basketball-related income, it’s going to be difficult to engineer the kind of move necessary to get the Raptors over the hump.

Even when Reggie Evans returns, which should be around the time of the trade deadline, the Raptors’ problems won’t all be solved.

Assuming Evans is able to come back and be that interior presence, defensively, there won’t be many nights when boxing out an opponent becomes problematic.

The need for an established wing player with late shot-clock abilities is obvious, but those kinds of athletic pieces aren’t readily available.

When a team can’t go athletic, it can go big.

The buzz around the NBA is that bigs such as Marcus Camby and Brendan Haywood might be had for the right price

Quote:
Haywood should have been a Raptor when he came out of North Carolina. Instead of taking the seven-footer with the 17th overall pick in the 2001 draft, the Raptors selected Michael Bradley, one of the nicest people one will ever meet, but he never met expectations.

At the time, talk was that Vince Carter, who was calling most of the shots for the Raptors, didn’t want to play alongside his collegiate teammate in Haywood.
Quote:
Unless they adjust their roster, it will be a short-lived run because they simply are not built for the post-season.

They don’t have enough athleticism and they don’t have enough quality bigs.

They have shooters and their offence will win one, perhaps two playoff games, but they can’t flourish in a seven-game series.

Maybe they have to look at trading a Jose Calderon, a DeMar DeRozan, and one of many expiring contracts.

You can’t trade Andrea Bargnani because he looms as the team’s incumbent at power forward if Bosh isn’t around past this summer.

You can’t trade Hedo Turkoglu because of his cumbersome contract.

GM Bryan Colangelo was quite masterful in remaking his roster last summer. He addressed many deficiencies and at times the Raptors have played extremely well.

He now has to take that next step, a step that will involve sacrificing a core piece.

The fact that he suggest trading DeRozan is ridiculous.

Zicarelli is great at random thoughts, isn't he? I mean it's not just that the Sun Sports section seems to insist on zero paragraphs, he truly seems incapable of connecting any two thoughts.

IMO the Raps need a hired gunner to come in when times are tough and the offense gets stagnant. I know that seems to be the consensus, some of the players are available I do not think the Raps have the assets to get them without ruining the core.

IMO i would feel alot better if the Raps went out and got a true centre that can come in and play a little low post defense and get some boards and block a shot or two. It would be nice if it was someone good but even a Joel Anthony type player (Not exactly JA but with some of the skill set) We usually have lots of offense so defensive 5 IMO would be an asset.

BINGO! We could really use Parker right now. Someone a little more athletic than him, with some shooting ability, would be nice.

If we had another offencive player brought in to be our gunner at the 2 spot what will be Hedo's excuse then be ??? he will see less of the ball. The guy we should want to trade is Hedo but who in their right mind would want that horrible contract he signed.

If we want to advance to second round this year, then yes we need a developed SG. I'd rather see how much Demar will develop, we have young guards with a lot of potential, the only thing I'd want right now is an upgrade to Wright, and a defensive minded C

He would see the ball more if Jose is the one traded. It would be him and Jack as the primary ball handlers distributers and no Jose.

You could play half his minutes with Beli or Derozan + Banks in the backcourt

Not to say that we couldn't use one, but this is a difficult time to make big trades. Unless you can get a bargain somehow, I'd rather stay put. This team will not go very far regardless, and there's the big question that needs to be answered first.

From everything I've read, Butler is not available, or if it is, they are asking for a LOT. So I would put that out of my mind if I were you.

Martin will most likely become available, but they will get offers like Josh Howard, and they have a decent PG in udrih. And martin would have to accept coming off the bench here, as his defense would hurt our starting lineup too much. That's a lot of IFs there.

IMO Igoudala is like Bosh now, everybody think he'll be traded, except for his team who has no intention do it. MAYBE if they can get rid of brand in the process, but I can't think of many teams who'd take on that contract. Dalembert is not the problem there, he's a decent C at 10/yr, for which they have no backup.

Trading Calderon for Hinrich is unacceptable to the bulls, who want to get rid of the contract for expiring, so they have cap space in the summer. Even we could package wright somehow, do you really want to help the Bulls make a push for Bosh this summer???

And ellis ... don't even get me started on that. The guy takes 25 shots a game and has a very low efficiency, which means all those shots are wasted with him. I wouldn't want ellis if we got him for free. Even if they gave us a draft pick, I would still not want him on this team. He's like the opposite of what we need.
