Raptors nearly made a deal with the Pistons at the 2011 draft

Quote:
The other interesting bit of information that emerged during this Raps/Pistons game came from Pistons.com editor and True Blue Pistons blogger Keith Langlois, who has alerted the world about a potential draft night trade between Toronto and Detroit that apparently fell through when the Cavaliers shocked everyone by selecting Tristan Thompson instead of Jonas Valanciunas

Raptors get Valanciunas, plus lottery pick. Remember draft night: Joe D said he was on phone w/Raps when Cavs shocked by taking TThompson 4

Keith Langlois (@Keith_Langlois) February 23, 2012

Langlois went on to tweet this:

#Raptors #Pistons had deal near, one for one, plus swap of 5th, 8th picks. Likely Pistons would have Valanciunas in Europe, Raps B Knight

Wait a minute. Just before Colangelo made the pick, he was on the phone with someone and said, "Are you serious about this? If I don't get my guy (in the draft) I'll call you right back." JV was his guy, so he made the pick. No way was JV going to end up in Detroit. So I don't know why they think JV ends up in Detroit after the trade. He was the target.

I think they're suggesting if they had just gone ahead and done the deal anticipating Cleveland wasn't going to botch the pick.

Knight and Leonard were the two players I wanted most going into the draft, and both have looked good so far. Hopefully Valanciunas will pay off.

JV was the guy I was hoping for but thought Leonard would go much later....all the Biyombo love was overstated, but he does look like an athletic freak.

If Cleveland took JV then the trade with Detroit would be Knight and Byombo?

I have a feeling that if JV wasnt avail at 5th, Colangelo was looking for Knight/Walker as their 2nd option. But w/e we got JV so its irrelevant now

Were people really expecting him to be good right away though? I think most people knew he'd be a project, but were intrigued by his athletic gifts.

I could see him being on par with Deandre Jordan in another season or two.
