Raptors might be one of worst defenses in playoff history

Quote:
According to Basketball-Reference.com, the Raptors are currently at a defensive rating of 113.1. Since the '77-78 season (when Basketball Reference starts tracking offensive and defensive efficiencies), there have been thirteen teams with a defensive rating of 113 or higher, including the Raps. Of those 13 teams, only one team, the 81-82 Nuggets, made the playoffs. So if the Raps somehow manage to sneak in they'll be only the second team since '77 to play defense as badly as they do and make the postseason. Meanwhile, that Nuggets team had an offensive rating of 114.3 compared to 111.1 for the Raptors.

On the one hand maybe it's a good indication that advanced metrics are sometimes flawed and don't tell the whole story. On the other hand, have you seen the flipping Raptors? They are far and away an abomination to the art of basketball defense. Can't trap, can't rebound can't steal, can't disrupt, can't stop anything.

Toronto's clinging to their playoff lives in the eighth seed. And if they don't step up their defense in a big way, they're going to saddle up as the second worst defense in the modern age to make the playoffs.

well put SWAN... I think this fact surprises NO ONE who has watched more than 2 games by this team this year... i really thought we had turned the corner, but this team has no passion and seems to drift up and down the floor. we have no break out, and with Jose in there tonight, we have even less, yet we get destroyed on fast breaks most nights... no transition defense, no perimeter defense, no inside defense to speak of, no wonder teams wait until the 3rd quarter with these guys, i think Jose passes out too many gatordrinks during the break and they all spend the 3rd holding in a urinary force!! sigh....

You may disagree, but Belli does this and so does Jack for that matter. One barely plays now and the other is now coming off the bench in favor of a pylon.

whenever I see Beli (rarely) play he overpersues on D and gets called for stupid fouls

I think Triano doesn't get defense so he wants to outscore the opposing team now
whats the over/under on Caldy to Bosh tonight? 30 times?

He's pesky and active on D, as of a month ago he had the second most total steals on this team and he's coming off the bench. That speaks to two things, we're pretty bad defensively and he while not being our best defender is active. I would prefer that over Hedo & Jose's D anyday of the week.

Banks always tried to pick PG up full court. Weems and Belli have active hands. Just look which players run on the breaks.

For a stretch I believe coaching staff wanted to see 25+ deflections per game on D. Rarely happened.
When your two star players (four if you include Jose and Hedo) don't care about D, its hard for rest of team keep that mentality. Don't care as in let them score uncontested layups, avoid fouling, avoid taking charges even.
Some other coach would bench them for that. But Triano was the one who taught Bargs how to not to foul out Apparently - avoid fouling...
