Thumbs up Raptors, Mavs now contenders

Quote:
If Chris Bosh is planning on leaving Toronto next summer, you wouldn't know it by reading his Twitter feed.

At around midnight on Wednesday, Bosh tweeted the following message, along with a link to the story that his team had acquired some much-need depth in the yet-to-be-made-official four-team trade that sent Shawn Marion to Dallas.

"Welcoming my new Raptor Team mates Devean George and Antoine Wright ! Welcome to TDOT!"

If Dirk Nowitzki was on Twitter, he might be expressing similar excitement.

Both the Raptors and Mavs have made big improvements this summer, capped by the deal that took all of Wednesday to happen. Neither squad is at the same level as the Lakers, Celtics, Cavs or Magic. But in an offseason where keeping payroll down is sometimes more of a priority than increasing wins, Mavs owner Mark Cuban and Raptors president Bryan Colangelo have sent a message to their teams and their fans: We are getting better.

Cuban's own late Wednesday tweet spelled out how hard he's been working to improve the Mavs: "Its been a long day of looking at spreadsheets, reading NBA cap rules and rubbing my eyes"

Cuban wanted Marion and he got him, somehow figuring a way to acquire the four-time All-Star in a sign-and-trade deal that paid him more than the mid-level exception and still allowed the Raptors to acquire Hedo Turkoglu. The move was the capper on what has been an impressive summer for the Mavs so far.

For some reason (probably because the idea was ridiculous in the first place), Cuban wasn't able to get -- as one Dallas-area writer had proposed a few months ago -- Chris Paul from the Hornets for expiring contracts. Cuban brought back Jason Kidd, overpaying to do so. But Kidd had a solid season last year, is still an effective floor leader, and by bringing him back, the Mavs can maintain the momentum they built at the end of last season.

By adding Marcin Gortat (assuming the Magic don't match his offer sheet), Dallas gets a more mobile center and a better fit with Kidd than Erick Dampier. With Marion, the Mavs get much-needed athleticism, an all-purpose defender and somebody that Kidd can feed on the break (Dampier and Dirk Nowitzki don't exactly run the floor well).

The Mavs could afford to let Wright go after signing defensive specialist Quinton Ross on Wednesday. Overall, Dallas has added depth, defense and speed. They're pretty stacked with talent as well, led by the former MVP Nowitzki. Among Western Conference contenders, only L.A. and San Antonio are surer bets to be a top-four seed in April.

The Raptors, meanwhile, may be headed back to the Playoffs after a dismal 33-49 season. Before working Wednesday's four-way, sign-and-trade deal, the Raptors looked like they were sacrificing their depth in order to bring in Turkoglu. And rookie DeMar DeRozan, the No. 9 overall pick who likely isn't ready to contribute, looked like he would be thrown in the fire right away.

With Wright and George, Toronto gets guys that can teach DeRozan the ropes and keep him from hitting the rookie wall in December. And we mustn't forget the pre-Draft trade that brought in Reggie Evans to provide some desperately needed rebounding. Evans can do the dirty work that starting center Andrea Bargnani cannot.

Of course, Colangelo's best work was in convincing Turkoglu that Toronto was his next home and perhaps dispelling the notion that high caliber free agents don't want to come to Canada. Turkoglu will take a load off Bosh's shoulders and give the Raptors a second go-to guy.

Even if all the moves don't work out perfectly for Toronto, at least Bosh knows team management wants to win, and is willing to do whatever it takes to surround him with talent. And next year, when he makes a decision about his future, Bosh may realize that not many teams can say the same.

So what happens next off season when Bosh opts in for 17.5+ mil for 1 year ... we would still be in the same boat.

why i gotta be the guy to say it?? we paid way too much for turk, he wont be able to do the things he did in orlando, we still have no real inside presence in the starting lineup, alot of jump shooters, 2 guys that love to dominate the ball, an unknown and so far weak bench and the top 3 teams in the east all got stronger this offseason imo..... aiming high for us would be like a 5th or 6th seed followed by a 1st round exit. I hate to be the reality check, but barring a miracle, we just got worse defensely, from already one of the worst defensive teams, our reboudning issue hasnt been resolved, nor the inside presience, all this move did was make our team look better on paper, i have a bad feeling the realityh wont be close. I never liked Turk on Orlando, neither do my rl friends who are magic fans, and you all are about to find out how many idiotic, chucking plays he makes.

If anybody really thinks us or dallas are contenders, i feel bad for them. Cuban does dumber things then BC imo. Kidd is a huge blunder they cant get away from, hopefully they can salvage something from dampiers stupid contract, but i dont think adding marion makes them that much better, they still arent close to the west elite.

I will hold you to this, my friend. No jumping on the Turk bandwagon for you after this comment.

i am beginning to realize that BC has a pretty good idea of what this team needs and he has shown he is not afraid to put his rep on the line to make deals that stun people!!

Way to be a massive downer...Asshole haha.

They are still BETTER and while we paid "too much" for Turk. Is it really? Like look at other contracts in the league! It's not so bad. When the cap gets smaller it could hurt a bit.

Stop being a tight-wad!

PS- see you saturday...Today is no good.

I would have rather stood pat, not add any big contracts, let the chips fall where they may next year, find out wtf Bosh wants to do and go from there, adding an overpaid contract and weaking our bench in no way improves where we were at the end of last year, in fact, i rather have that team then the one we have now. We have less boards, D and bench then we had then, but more scoring, something we never had a problem with for the last few years anyways.... great, lets get another jump shooter and maybe we are really contenders, who needs to go inside in this day and age, who needs d or rebounding, or a bench.

I guess all the options suck, unless Bosh wants to stay. This guy gives us a nice mix of overrated role players when he does.

I gotta be me Ren, saturday is goot and dont worry, im making room on the anti-hedo wagon for alot of you, just like the JO one, it will slowly gain steam, i remember the same excited feelings from alot of you last year, and me being a big "Downer" and all, about losing TJ and saying the world knows JO is washed up and will never be quality again... guess i was wrong there too, make room on the JO wagon plz!!

Ren, how are we BETTER with turk now?? What does he really bring, aside from last second shots, that we didnt have before?? He drives a bit, but he had a team full of threats to drive, if he is the only guy driving on our team, he will be guarded by smaller, faster ppl that will force him to shoot and teams will cheat to stop it, since we have no other real threat to drive from the perimeter (delfino??). We get worse defensively, rebounding wise, man to man, help in losing shawn, who brought alot of things we lacked. We could always score, i dont see how taking shots away from Bosh and Bargs to give shots to Hedo really makes us better.

We didn't pay too much for him if you look around at what other players have been getting. As for the other shit.....i guess someone had to be a debbie downer, might as well be you.

i don't think we're contenders either. I think we'll be better than last year, and i think we'll make the playoffs and be safely over .500, but i don't think we're contenders at this stage.
