Thumbs up Raptors Make Qualifying Offers to Jose & Delfino

As Grange stated, nothing but a formality but at least the wheels are rolling.

BTW, I love Grange's little jab at Ford too.

The first is that the Raptors have made Jose Calderon a qualifying offer for the 2008-09 season; in fact they made it on Wednesday while Raptors president Bryan Colangelo and assistant general manager Maurizio Gherardini were in Madrid putting the finishing touches on the buyout for Jorge Garbajosa.

It's mostly a formality. The qualifying deal, worth 125 per cent of Calderon's salary for last season, or a bump to $3.03-million from his $2.471-million he earned last season, would allow Calderon to become an unrestricted free agent next season if he took the one-year offer.

As of July 1st Calderon become a restricted free agent, meaning the Raptors will have the right to match any deal offered by another club. It's is all but certain they will offer Calderon a deal that will keep him in Toronto for the next five seasons.

Also a few emailers were eager to point out a rumour coming from Phoenix that would see the Raptors send T.J. Ford and the No.17 pick to the Suns for Boris Diaw.

Poked around a little on this and I don't see it happening. One reason is that while the Raptors have had interest Diaw and new Suns coach Terry Porter might have warm feelings for Ford dating from his time with the Bucks, if the Suns trade for Ford how can they be sure Steve Nash will adjust to coming off the bench?

Default Raptors extend offers to Calderon, Delfino

Quote:
TORONTO (TICKER) —The Toronto Raptors extended qualifying offers to guards Jose Calderon and Carlos Delfino on Friday.

Calderon had career highs with 11.2 points and a team-best 8.3 assists per game last season, leading the NBA in assist-to-turnover ratio at 5.38. He played in all 82 games for the Raptors last season, his third with the team.

Delfino also appeared in all 82 games last year, which was his first with Toronto. The fourth-year pro averaged career highs with 9.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest.

By signing the restricted free agents prior to the June 30 deadline, Toronto has the right to refuse permission if the player wants to sign an offer sheet with another team later in the offseason.
