RAPTORS LOWERING TICKET PRICES NEXT SEASON TO HELP FILL ACC

Quote:
TORONTO -- Toronto Raptors games will be more affordable for season-ticket holders next season.
Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment Ltd., is lowering prices for next season in an effort to fill up the Air Canada Centre. The reduced prices will remain in effect for the 2012-2013 season as well.
"It's no secret there were some pockets we were trying to fill, that we've been trying to fill for the last couple of years," said Rajani Kamath, MLSE's director of corporate communications.
Ticket prices in the lower bowl will decrease between five and 30 per cent. Upper bowl tickets will be reduced by 10 to 15 per cent, making them the cheapest they've been in five seasons.
Kamath said the reduction comes after a rescaling of the seating at the Air Canada Centre, with an increase from 14 price points up to 20.
The drop in ticket prices also comes amid tough times for Toronto's NBA franchise. The Raptors were once was among the league leaders in sellouts -- 19,800 at the Air Canada Centre -- but seemingly destined to miss the post-season for the third consecutive season, have been struggling at the turnstile.
The Raptors were averaging 16,527 fans a night -- 17th in the league -- heading into Tuesday's game versus the New Orleans Hornets.

Good move. We're heading into dangerous attendance numbers with possible contraction of the NBA.

Really, nearly 17,000 per game and selling 84% is dangerous numbers....seriously? We're the 3rd worst team in the NBA and have 14 teams with worse attendance.

Basic 4 P's of Marketing (Product, Price, Place, Promotion):

When you're Products is poor, you reduce the Price.

Good wake-up call for MLSE and BC, the fans have spoken, put a winning product on the floor, and the fans will show up. Its not Hockey. I guess its the major reason why they have not signed BC to an extension. You think if were a playoff team and the fans are selling-out the ACC, a contract would have been signed by now.

Yeah, but in this city unless it's a near sell out night in night out, wether it's monday or sunday, wether the team is good or bad it's looked upon as a failure. "The fans have spoken"

Dollar is worth $1.03-1.04 US and US$ is the currency of basketball. So they won't even notice a difference. Doubt they do it otherwise.

Season seat renewals will be record low this year. They continue to work on the same group of people. The lower price might bring some new people in.

If the league continues to support just four teams by making loopholes so they can fill their rosters, you can expect an even bigger drop.

Couple that with a lock out, and the cash cow might be heading to slaughter.

Good point. Compared to a decade ago, when the dollar was worth 67 cents US, player salaries relative to the US cost MLSE ~33% less.

I don't think this move is strictly because of the dollar, though. Even though Canada was hit less hard by the recession, sports attendance is still down, and couple that with a rebuilding team, cutting ticket prices is necessary to keep attendance up.

I forgot to add a smilie. It was meant to be sarcastic; most American media is writing about how Toronto is going to be the likeliest team for contract.
