And what if the team doesn't have a successful counter for your tactic? A system is not a set of tactics.

If you're looking at pick and roll situations for instance - if a team takes something away that is working with the pick and roll plays, then you don't need to stop running the play. It means you need to exploit what they are giving you when they take away what has already worked. Teams don't have systems that just say run this play exactly like so no matter what the defense does. Everything is about reading defenses and properly executing the good options available. A guy like Marbury has never been any good at that - guess why he is no longer playing? Tony Parker used to be not so good at that - guess why Popovich would berate him regularly? Making plays is not about passing to X and then O and then back to X who shoots. That only works with cardboard cutouts on defense.

To say that Sam makes no adjustments to what other teams do is ridiculous. Maybe he doesn't always make the right adjustments, and there are always limits as to how much room he has to maneuver. Personally, I think he has to mix things up beyond the constant half-court sets, but I don't mind them going in that direction as a point of emphasis, and it actually does point them more in the direction of a team like the Spurs or the Pistons. We could try the smoke and mirrors route, and constantly change things up, but how far is that really going to ultimately get us? How far has it gotten any team? Is that really something to build on, or should they in fact be trying to build a successful franchise on the Spurs and Pistons model?

This is exactly what I'm talking about so I'm not sure why we're arguing.

When we're getting destroyed by the same offensive play over and over I want to see us change defenders and/or switch defenses... rather than just concede defeat.

When we can't seem to score with one play I'd like to see us take a second and exploit the other team's weakness and/or ride the hot hand.

THAT's what I'm trying to stress.
