Raptors’ Jack wants to prove he deserved big contract

Quote:
That form, though, was not evident as Jack started his tenure with the Raptors. Every foray into the paint seemed tentative, every shot unsure, every fast break hesitant.

In the last two games, though, Jack has started to look the part of the player who received that contract.

On Friday against Miami, he had his first double-digit scoring game of the season with 17 points — he averaged 13.1 points per game last season.

Against Orlando on Sunday, he had eight points, seven rebounds and 11 assists.

“Coming into the league, I always heard stories about a guy who got his money and kind of put his feet up, so to speak,” Jack said.

“I don’t think anybody could look at me and ever say that. As you see, I’m always putting up extra shots and doing extra things to get prepared for the game. Not so much that I didn’t want to let myself down — I didn’t want to let everybody else down. I think that was some of the added pressure in the beginning.”

Jack’s dual role makes his slow progress understandable. In addition to being Jose Calderon’s backup at point guard, he has also spent major minutes in crunch time on the floor with both Calderon and Hedo Turkoglu, who has most of the late-game ball-distribution responsibilities.

It is in that role that Jack drilled a pair of three-pointers against Orlando. So in that sense, there is more on Jack’s plate then most newcomers.

Hopefully he comes out strong in the Pacers game. I truely believe he is a good piece for us, he needs to jus show it more consistently

We don't need him to be a scorer as much as a defender.

Stats wise he is in the shitter right now. The defence is a bit better then jose (not saying much though). He does need to get his act together. How the hell was this guy a scorer anyways....

He just needs to relax. He's trying too hard right now. He just needs to go out there and be loose.

Great article. I like Jarrett Jack hes nothing like TJ. Jack understands his role which is to back up Jose and get some burn at the 2 spot. However, I like many, have said his d is not that great. I even think Jose plays d just as good so we get no up grade there when Jack plays the 1. So overall we are weak at 1 spot even when the second unit plays. As much as I like Jack hes not as good as I thought, hes alot better then what we had last year though. I always thought that Jack was good at driving to the basket , I think that is his strength, however, we have not seen that yet or on a consistant basis.Hes a very weak shooter and not a 3 point shooter. I think we are asking Jack to do something hes not very good at, hence maybe thats why he has played like shit this year. Jack will need more time, hes a work in progress this year on our team.

Although it is early, Jack has kind of disappointed me.

BTW, this may be off topic, but I absolutely CRINGE whenever I see Jack/Jose duo in the backcourt closing out games.

This is what everyone expected - him to play tough as nails D and be a solid floor general. No one really expects the guy to score. He had a career year scoring last year, something I'm not sure he'll ever match again.

but he isn't totally badass, nor a floor general, never has been.

I don't get it.

He doesn't play good D? You sure you're not confusing him with Jack Armstrong? Check the years in Portland and Indy. He plays pretty darn good D..and has/had a shot to keep defenses honest, plus could drive the lane.

Jack is only making 5 million per year. He is signed a 20 million contract over 4years. Its a contract fit for a good back-up point guard. If RAP fans want to complain about a player who deserves their big contract, ask about a player who doesn't bring it every game (Andrea Bargnani). He makes 10 million per year over 5 years.

Preseason and first games he was praised for talking on defense a lot. Did he stop doing that?
I wish they make him full time backup behind Jose for 18 minutes at PG. We have plenty SG who need more minutes.

Again, I have ZERO dislike for Jack, but honestly, I have yet to notice him on the floor, he makes zero impact, in games I have seen so far.

when jack's jumper starts falling he'll be well worth the money. Guy is tough, a warrior, zero tooth protection and he works hard too. He won't have a hard time living up to 5 mil a year
