Raptors interview Shabazz Muhammad and Cody Zeller at the Draft Combine

Quote:

The Toronto Raptors’ entire front office was in Chicago at the NBA Draft Combine to evaluate the 2013 draft class.

UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad interviewed with the Raptors and several other teams on Wednesday night. Muhammad is a 6-foot-6, 20 year old freshman that averaged 17.9 points (44.3% FG | 37.7% 3PT | 71.1% FT) and 5.2 rebounds in 30.8 minutes per game. Both DraftExpress and NBAdraft.net currently have him going 10th to the Portland Trail Blazers.

They have also interviewed Cody Zeller, a 7-foot center out of Indiana. The 20 year old sophomore averaged 16.5 points (56.2% FG | 75.7% FT) and 8.1 rebounds in 29.5 minutes per game. DraftExpress currently has him going ninth to the Minnesota Timberwolves, while NBAdraft.net has him going fourth to the Phoenix Suns.

Why would they interview guys that are going in the range of the pick we have? Isn't that just a waste of time

Dario 05-17-2013 12:36 AM

Lol? Pointless unless we're trading bargs for a lotto pick (;

pzabby 05-17-2013 12:56 AM

zeller: we love our centres to shoot free throws like bosses :kadri:

We don't have a pick. I guess they're just doing it for show, or for OKC or in the rare case that BC actually acquires a 1st round pick.

bigmandinky 05-17-2013 01:27 AM

Well I guess they need to just incase we get a top 3 pick in the lotto.

In the unlikely and horrible case yes.

A few reasons (and there are probably more):

1 - Say we get lucky in the lotto and land the 3rd pick. We're allowed to keep it. Rather than pick 3rd, perhaps we use it to facillitate a trade that brings a later pick back. That would be particularly relevant for Shabbaz if he falls outside the top 5.

2 - in the case of Zeller, in particular, maybe they use the 3rd pick on him, if we get lucky in the lotto. It might be a reach in some people's opinions, but this is also supposed to be a "weaker" draft, which, historically, has meant that a lot of the internet rankings don't match up with what happens in reality. GMs might as well just go with who they like.

3 - it's opportunity to evaluate young talent and, even if there is only a slim chance these guys will come up in trade talks over the next few years, you still take advantage of any opportunity to talk to them. It's your job to have as much information as possible. You might as well interview for the sake of interviewing.

Back in 2010, the year we drafted Ed Davis, I remember the Raptors interviewing Demarcus Cousins. There was no way in hell that he was going to slip to the range where the Raptors were drafting, but it was worth talking to the guy, just in case a trade opportunity might pop-up sometime in the next few years, or you're able to make a draft day trade that eventually puts you in position to draft the guy.

Colangelo is doing due diligence for his next year's job as the Bobcats scout.

rapsmannn 05-17-2013 04:43 AM

well if you like a player enough especially on draft day you can always make a move into the draft

im sure the raptors are looking into buying one of atlantas pick, or trading into one

or a wtf scenario, raptors trade bargnani to okc for perkins and our pick, they get a big who can score the ball, raptors get there pick back and hold true to the rebuild

because Presti has apparently turned into Kevin McHale since all those successful picks. Tyson Chandler pass, Perkins contract, Harden trade. WTF? :jack:

Carlos Danger 05-17-2013 07:27 AM

Pretty clear we're trading up in a blockbuster deal

Admiral 05-17-2013 09:22 AM

if you're interested in a player you have to do your work on him, even if you don't appear to have a chance at him at this point
luck, trades, etc. always give you a chance at any player that is up for grabs
besides, i think BC just wants to keep every option open like he always does and i think he wants to put it into the public and to other franchises that they are open to any possibility, for example the possibility of doing blockbuster type moves to get themselves into the draft
or maybe its a decoy to make the other teams think they are interested in those 2 players or at least in a draft pick in that top 10 range

Take out the pick and it's highly reasonable. OKC needs more than what Perkins is giving and Perkins would be a tremendous add to our frontcourt, though I think it would just give our wings more reason to chuck as well.

Yeah I agree. Bargs for Perkins makes sense for OKC. They have Collison. They also have PJonesIII. They then have Orton and Thabeet on cheap non-guaranteed deals. They can use the raps' pick to draft a big too. So, yeah, OKC would definitely do it. The raps would actually save a bit of money if it was a straight up deal too.

Claudius 05-17-2013 12:22 PM

OKC should've amnestied Perkins when it had the chance.

0nekhmer 05-17-2013 12:49 PM

Ugh, in hindsight we probably could've gotten a lottery pick for bargs a season ago. We'll be lucky to get a second rounder for him now.

Probably but like always BC gets attached to his draft picks.

how about this: we amnesty bargnani, they do it to perkins and both teams pick the other player through the waiver wire :)
