Default Raptors HQ: The Cost of Waiting on Jack

Well considering the team still has a few days left before they find out if he's officially a Raptor or not, I'd say pretty bad.

Because while Toronto waits to see if the former Georgia Tech guard joins them for next season, it could be at the expense of other free agents.

As I commented yesterday, the Raptors plan A is obviously Jack, but they needed to have a plan B in place, even if they felt fairly confident that they'd be able to snag the former Pacer. One would think that plan B consisted of some combination of Carlos Delfino, Rasho Nesterovic and others but as the Raps wait on Jack, many of those "other" options look to be drying up.

This morning various sources were reporting that Chris Wilcox, a player I felt would be a good addition to the Dinos for little salary, had agreed to sign with the Pistons, and confirming rumours I heard in Vegas, Rasho Nesterovic was also on Detroit's wish list. If these two are off the board, it doesn't leave a lot of options for Colangelo in terms of serviceable back-ups to Bargnani.

Aaron Gray, Johan Petro or Shelden Williams? Is there enough upside in names like this?

Or how about athletic shot-blockers like Stromile Swift or Johan Petro, players who just haven't been able to live up to expectations?

Grizzled vets like Adonal Foyle, Ben Wallace or Theo Ratlif? Ratliff might be interesting if he could stay healthy...

...and please don't say Jamaal Magloire.

Of the remaining "bigs," the best options are actually 4's like Joel Anthony or again, Toronto's own Pops Mensah-Bonsu. Both have played the center spot at times, especially Anthony, and both have more upside than almost anyone left in their category.

Another option might be Joe Smith, however I'm not sure he has any reason to leave Cleveland regardless of how much money is thrown his way. And if Toronto goes a bit smaller, then maybe they gamble on someone like Leon Powe, who because of his recent injury might be had for cheap.

The tricky thing is that if waiting on Jack eliminates various options for bench depth, BC might be placed in a situation where he feels he needs to overpay to secure a much-needed back-up at the 5. And considering the expected luxury tax drop next summer, this is something they need to be very wary of.

The last thing Toronto wants is to shore up an important bench spot behind Jose only to be forced into signing Robert Swift for the next 3 years...

Rasho loves Toronto right? Do we need to be concerned about him joining some other team?

The article if flawed.

at the moment, our PG situation is the thinnest out of our lineups.

We have Jose, and Roko basically. Roko hasn't had a good SL, and Banks is a bitch.

We have a Wilcox, his name is Reggie.

We need another PG, then Rasho perhaps and I'll be a happy camper.

Outside of fast break dunks, Wilcox' offense is very much limited, I'de rather have Rasho.

Well, in the case of Rasho, he said in a recent interview he was willing to wait, but much like AP, it seems he may need to explore his opportunities out there. I still hope he ends up here, as we need a big who can at least slow down the two Eastern giants of Shaq & Howard. I like Aaron Gray and Anthony from that list, but I certainly don't think they address the problems we'll have in Cleveland/Orlando. (And don't forget KG, who shredded Bosh last year -- be nice to have someone to at least be able to help out in that situation, -- again, Rasho being a good defensive rotator)

Not sure how much I believe of the Delfino reports, but he would be de-foolish if he's annoyed that the Raps left him til last to sign.
1. They had to sign Turk first, then the flurry of activity followed from there.
2. They have a guaranteed crack at his contract, so why wouldn't they put him on the backburner???
3. They needed to see how much $$$ they would have to spend on him after all the other activity. He could perceive that as a slight, but the reality is, (as I understand it), is that he can't sign anywhere else without going through the raps.

Moreso than De-finicky, I think BC needs to acquire Rasho's services post haste!

this article talks as if waiting an extra week for a player to become part of your team is going to POSSIBLY wreck your plans.

rasho and delfino aren't top agents and even if they are teams aren't chomping at the bit to get them. so, i really don't understand the truth to this article.

plus, plan b has been stated it's called the linas kleiza plan.

Looks like Detroit has signed Wilcox...perhaps this means they no longer will have any interest in rasho?

Drying up?

If Jack doesn't sign, other FA still available:

Nesterovic
Delfino (bird rights)
Barnes
Kleiza
Carter
Pops

If Jack isn't here i'd love to see us sign Barnes or Kleiza + Carter with the MLE and then sign Nesterovic with the Bi Annual. And if Delfino will sign for 4Mil/yr with our bird rights, sign him.

Jose/Carter/Delfino
Delfino/DD/Wright
Turk/Barnes/DD
Bosh/Evans/?
Bargs/Rasho/POB

If Jack is off the table I could see him going for one year contracts at a premium, as he discussed a few weeks ago.

Hypothetically Delfino can sign anywhere else. We don't have the right to match anymore. It's up to him to decide where he wants to play in the NBA.

However, we have his bird rights which means we can sign him to a 10mill one year contract if we so choose, too convince him to come back here. I have a feeling they would like to see someone offer him something to establish his market value and than once he's realistic, pay him more, but not have to pay his demand of $5mill per season.

His shoulder injury also really complicates things because he might not allow team doctors to check him out until he has a bonafide offer. He should be smart and just take a max of $4mill a year.

bc must have been pretty sure that indiana can't pay 5/yr to jack. Between tinsley, ford, jack and the rookies they have at PG, they would be paying 25/yr to that position - that's absurd.

Maybe that's why they're rumored to be trying to move TJ...

at 8/yr tj is a fairly toxic contract right now, after all his health problems. Only a team like boston who is desperately trying to move rondo could contemplate trading for TJ. But they would be asking for more talent in return, maybe tj + rush for rondo or something like that.

They're not really. It turned out to be a trade idea on a Celtic's forum that got posted as more serious info.

how many more days be pacers cant match. Regarding this thread, i don't care if they lose delfino, but i hope this wait wunt make rasho go else where. BC you better know what you are doing, we need Rasho, not very often you ca get a player that wants to play here and is decent at his position
