Exclamation Raptors Hit Milestone | Highest NBA ratings EVER in Canada

The Toronto Raptors via Twitter just announced that Game 5 vs the Nets was the highest ever watched NBA game in Canada .

Quote:
Game 5 of #Raptors - Nets was highest-ever TV audience for NBA game in CAN! Averaged 968,000 viewers/ min & over 4 million fans watched #RTZ
This is HUGE for this organization IMO, and all of Canada (or at this point 1/8th) seems to be backing our Raptors. Here's to getting over 1 million viewers in game 6, and if this goes to a game 7 I wonder if we could hit 1.5+ million...as that would just be an insanely huge game for the Raps and the organization

@gourmetspud Think it averaged 968,000. Total reach was 4,060,000, it peaked at 2,016,000 at the 175th minute. I need to stick to hashtags.

How Basketball Overtook Hockey As The Most Popular Youth Sport In Canada - Forbes

Quote:
Today, the growth rate of basketball participation in Canada among the country’s youth exceeds that of hockey and soccer. Since 2010, basketball participation has seen a growth rate of 16 percent. A 2010 study found that basketball is the most popular team participation sport in Canada among youth between the ages of 12 and 17. Additionally, 29 percent of all households in Canada have a household member who participates in basketball. Part of the reason for the sport’s growing participation in Canada in the face of soccer and hockey is its accessibility. ”Basketball is a sport that is easy and inexpensive to play, and a safe sport. There are a plethora of opportunities to play basketball in Canada. Over the last 20-years, organized basketball has become more relevant in Canada,” MacKenzie noted.

Relaxed immigration laws and increased participation opportunities paved the way for basketball to overtake hockey as the most popular sport among Canadian youth. However, the entry of the NBA into the country pushed the sport’s popularity in Canada over the edge. In 1995-96, the NBA strategically placed teams in two of Canada’s most-populous cities, with the Grizzlies taking up home in Vancouver and the Raptors heading to Toronto.

The locating of these teams to Canada provided the nation not only with teams to get behind, but the country’s young men with the ability to grow up watching players they would strive to emulate. ”What you are seeing now with the growth of the sport, is the first generation of kids who have grown up with the NBA being a strong element in their lives. A lot of the growth is related to the increased number of NBA games these children have seen on television. Previously, there might have only been one NBA game on television in Canada per week. Now, they can get up to 300 games per year on their televisions in Canada. With the advent of teams in Canada, it’s a lot easier for Canadians to experience the NBA in a way that they couldn’t have 20-years ago,” MacKenzie explained.

I agree. Like I love watching hockey but I cannot afford to play it but Basketball, I can just play, it's simply fun. It doesn't matter about wealth to a reasonable extent. I just like it better.

Damn... good thing they managed to win it. Ha.

Like others, as much as I love hockey, I didn't get into it because it was just so expensive. Meanwhile, I'm playing basketball with the same $30 ball I bought 5 years ago. It's all I ever needed. A ball, kicks, and local courts. Done.

The crazy thing is, is that the internet is more ubiquitous than it used to be as well. I'm sure a LOT more people were streaming the game (like I was - from Calgary) than when the previous record was set!

This is great news for the Raps. Hope it keeps up all throughout the playoffs.

Can't wait to see the numbers for Game 7. With it being on a Sunday you'd have to think that things are primed for records to be broken.

I think the record will definitely be broken. With the game being on Sunday afternoon, everyone that doesn't work weekends is home at 2:30 in the afternoon. The ratings are guaranteed to be through the roof, especially with it being a Game 7.

I've been thinking about this rise in fans and at first I thought it was because of the lack of playoffs in recent years and the fans just craving for it combined with no Leafs in the NHL playoffs and Toronto sports fans substituting that with the Raptors.

I also think now that it has something to do with the recent winter Olympics. Canadians have learned how to be outwardly expressive sports fans and how to come together as one country and cheer for one thing. In this case it's the Raptors. It's like watching those last two Olympic hockey gold medal games. Everyone is out there cheering as a whole. I think there needs to be some credit given to that Vancouver Olympics.

Wonder how much the availability of ABC broadcast will hurt TSN numbers. You'd think a game 7 Sunday would top 1 million.
