Default Raptors fire popular Alvin Williams

Raptors fire popular Alvin Williams, terrible message to rest of NBA: Smith

link

Quote:

Well, if Tim Leiweke wanted to make significant changes to get away from the Raptors past, he’s picked the right guy to fire.

In what I think is a terribly short-sighted move that will rankle as many people as anything he does, Leiweke has told Alvin Williams that his services are no longer required.

Yep, the chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment — on the job for less than a month — has jettisoned one of the great guys ever associated with the franchise and a man who wanted nothing more than to spend his entire career with the organization in some way, shape or form.

Williams had spent last season scouting for the team, based out of Philadelphia, but he was far, far more than just an employee picking up a cheque.

He loved the organization and the city, he was a link to some of the best times the team has ever had, he is a great guy who’d show up every now and then and sooth some antsy players, offer a unique perspective and be a valued confidant to many.

Fired. Not by the general manager who never spoke to him, but by a CEO who seems hellbent on getting his fingers in every decision at some level.

It sucks.

Look, we all know that keeping people around this team forever is hard; there has been too much change, too many people discarded.

I’d say that if you’ve got someone the fans love, the players trust, the coaches appreciate and who wants to be part of it, you don’t cast him adrift.

You keep him around somehow, let him keep scouting, let him keep coming around every month or so, let him do his job.

It’s not like Alvin was going to demand a seven figure salary and a say in all major personnel decisions. He wanted just to keep working, to be part of the Raptors.

There aren’t a lot of that kind of guy around, I cannot see the harm in keeping him, if for no other reason that what he represents.

Everyone knows how hard he played, what he gave to the team — hell, I bet he cut his career two years short by playing through bad knees because he wanted to win and for the franchise to flourish.

As messages go, they just sent a crappy one.

And people will notice.

Just beat me to it. Meh, I like Alvin as a player and a person but if he wasn't doing the job to TL's standard then he should go - he shouldn't stay based on his celebrity cache.

Wonder how this will effect Kyle Lowry since AW and he are buddies.

How would TL know how good he's doing his job? I doubt he's seen him do his job in any way.

Called history....there's years worth of a paper trail and I'm sure TL did his due diligence.

I have no problem with this. I appreciate Alvin's contributions to the team as a player as much as anyone but keeping someone around who isn't making the team better for sentimental reasons is unprofessional and has no place here.

If this is genuinely a move to improve the scouting department and something Leiweke feels is necessary to move the team forward, I'm all for it.

I don't dislike Doug as much as some people here but he basically the definition of "Stay the course, don't rock the boat" type of guy and it's often to his detriment (and admittedly refreshing sometimes in the hysterics that surround this team).

Alvin Williams was essentially brought here as a consultant/assistant coach. I didn't even know he scouted for us last season. And I was more talking about guys like Jim Kelly who was a scout here for over a decade. Oh well, kinda sucks to hear about him leaving. But I also kinda like the fact that there is an overhaul in personnel, with hopefully upgrades.

Who says he won't resurface in some other position with the team?

i dont mind the move at all... it puts everyone on notice and shows that no one is safe.
this franchise needs an overhaul, so let it begin.

Business is business. When a company is acquired, there is always some type of restructuring or re-orgination. New ownership and new management bring in their own people. Hey, if it worked in the Lakers and Nuggets organization, why not bring in the same type of success for the Raptors. There are always loyal and good people that get get removed from the organization, but we must trust Tim Leiweke and Masai Ujiri that they have done their due diligence and have someone who can do a better job than Alvin in scouting. The Raptors hired Magloire as a consultant and team ambassador last year. Hey Mr Doug Smith, why not offer another gratuitous job to MOPETE for his years of service to the RAPS. Business is business!

Maybe that's the problem, he's listed as the Raptors scout on the official site, so I'd assume that's his current job desciption, and he's based in Philly. But he doesn't do scouting? Then Leiweke comes in and it goes like this:

Kinda sucks in that I wished he could have been a bigger part of the puzzle, but it's easy to see that he was maybe another guy easy to like and with obvious appeal, but not getting anything done, not unlike a Triano. You can't raise expectations for most everyone, but let sentiments allow one or two to slide below those expectations. I don't think you should get a job just for wanting to be here - that sends the wrong message Doug, and that is what has likely been noticed in the past.

It's kind of odd that TL would go ahead and fire alvin after publicly saying that this is MU's team and he will defer to him for all BB decisions. It's not that I bought that, obviously he was going to have a strong opinion, but why not let MU make that decision, at least be the face of it.

Unless he wanted to save face for MU, given Alvin's popularity. Kind of TL is the bad guy and MU is the good guy position, which is possible.

Odds are it was Ujiri's decision. They were both employed by the organization for a couple years, so there is a chance that they were friends, in which case Ujiri may not have wanted to do it personally. There could be a number of other reasons as well for Leiweke to take the public stance - and the idea of shielding MU from any backlash is probably true to some degree.
