Raptors extend qualifying offer to money weems

Quote:

The Toronto Raptors announced Monday they have extended a qualifying offer to restricted free agent guard-forward Sonny Weems. Per team policy, financial details were not disclosed.

In accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, in order for a team to retain its rights of first refusal with respect to a restricted free agent it must tender the player a qualifying offer prior to June 30. A restricted free agent may sign an offer sheet with any team, but is subject to a right of first refusal in favour of the NBA team for which the player last played.

Weems averaged career highs in points (9.2) and minutes (23.9) in 59 games in 2010-11. In a career-best 28 starts, he posted averages of 10.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 29.8 minutes. He scored in double figures 27 times last season.

Weems has appeared in 140 games with Denver and Toronto in his three NBA campaigns, averaging 7.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 20.3 minutes. He joined the Raptors in a trade from Milwaukee on August 18, 2009.

Meh, I don't really want us to sign him.

Sonny still has potential to be a solid bench player. If anything, it ensures that DeMar will be sticking around in Toronto once his contract is up.

Acie 06-27-2011 02:14 PM

He's a good 9th or 10th guy off the bench at the right price.

Let the market dictate what he's worth and if some team wants to overpay they can let him go.

bltman 06-27-2011 02:15 PM

Not surprised. Once he was invited to and attended the Raptors’ draft party, it was obvious they were going to have him work out with Casey. I presume Casey liked what he saw during the work out and they made him an offer. I believe Dorsey also worked out with the guys that were in town. Wondering if he will receive an offer too...

moremilk 06-27-2011 02:17 PM

it's a qualifying offer, for a player of weems' salary, it would probably be in the low 1mil range
you always want to qualify your rfas, unless you *really* need that cap hold, which we don't

this doesn't mean we keep him, only that we get to match any offers. if he gets none, we do get to keep him, but at a bargani level price

1.091M. Also, we can rescind that offer whenever we like, if we do end up needing the cap space.

indeed. I'm not a fan of his personally, but he can be a useful player on this team and he has a good relationship with the other players. Retaining him seems logical - as long as it's at a modest price. Otherwise, see ya later Clarence!

hahaha thank you! Got tired of the Raptors board on their site, not enough activity. Glad I found this site, seems like a great spot.

Dark Knight 06-27-2011 02:24 PM

Maybe he can be Casey's new Stevenson?

cloudnine 06-27-2011 02:31 PM

For $1mil I guess it's okay, but I'd almost rather have the roster spot.

noticed there is a bit of hate for sonny on this forum. not in this thread, I've noticed that regular poster jeffb hates him!? that surprises me. he's certainly inconsistent and very rough round the edges but he's got some game and is certainly likeable and exciting. likeable and exciting (plus the flaws,) may not be ideal for your franchise guy but for a bench guy i think it's good to have someone who gives you highlight moments whilst maybe not being a massive contributor (although 10pts pg is a decent contribution no?)

anyway, as you can tell i really like him, and whilst i'm onboard that he should not be getting big money, at 1.1mill i think he is more than worth it.

oK. Jeffb hates everything and sometimes he likes to point out his dislikes a little more than he needs to. You'll get used to it and hopefully you can take such posts with a big fat grain of salt.

I'll just say there are a few thnigs about Sonny that turned off some fans last season. On the court there were times when he tried to do too much and fell flat. Dribbling into traffic, key turn overs, took any many shots, etc. also he said something pretty stupid about how he couldn't feed himself on his current income (something to that effect which no doubt is a little insulting to people with average incomes such as the regular fan). His recent legal troubles also didn't shine the best light onto his character.

I think Sonny is an OK player. Can be useful if he plays within his role. Don't really care too much about his personality as long as he contributes to the team.

jrob23 06-27-2011 02:54 PM

-shrugs-

Weems could be a decent role player with a defined role and under the right coach, maybe Casey will set him straight, Jay was giving him too much freedom offensively last season and i think that made him stop focusing on his D like he had previously.. i like him better as a SG than a SF though

yeah, i watched almost every game last season (damn PC broke and i had to send it away, missed some games,) and i share your views on his play, he can be frustrating but there's also the good times (jeffb doesn't look on the bright side does he!?)

thanks for the info on his comments and the legal thing, what was that by the way?

one issue i have with staying up to date is that i sometimes don't watch games till 1 or 2 days after they've happened so it's really hard to get on the internet for news stuff without seeing the results. I sometimes miss stuff like that.

RAPMAN 06-27-2011 03:00 PM

I like Sonny if he plays his role. Sonny brought up the point of defensive accountability about last year's team. Now that we have a coach who will actually implement defensive accountability, lets see how Sonny does. Competition will always bring out the best effort from our wing rotation. I think Sonny and James Johnson are our best wing defenders.
