Default Raptors Digest: DeMar DeRozan To Start

Its official. 9th overall pick DeMar DeRozan will start the season as the Toronto Raptors starting Shooting Guard. There had been some rumours that they would utilize DeRozan as the 6th man, but that picture is messy with Jack also expected to be the 6th man or at least get 6th man minutes.

Marco Belinelli will be DeRozan’s immediate backup and both Colangelo and Belinelli expect the Italian youngster to get enough minutes that someone is going to get fired in Golden State.

Starting is the better situation for DeRozan as he will not be leaned on to provide high volume scoring until he is ready and playing with the starters he will see a lot more 1-on-1 coverage and be able to create for himself and his team-mates. This is an ideal situation for the rookie and for Toronto Raptors fans whom must know by now that DeRozan’s development is a major story line in Chris Bosh deciding to extend or to look to become a #2 somewhere South of the border.

Fantasy Perspective: This is the best situation possible for DeMar DeRozan’s development in both fantasy and real life. The Belinelli threat is real however, so draft accordingly.

The start Derozan talk is just as stupid if you ask me. I hope that it works out but he's never played an NBA game and training camp hasn't even started. Don't you think it would be a good idea to use training camp and pre-season to evaluate our players before picking our starting line-up?

No we don't.

Derozan will get 16-18MPG (according to Jay), so what's the difference when those minutes are played. Makes sense to me that he plays with our best players for most of those minutes, were he can be set up by Jose, Turkoglu and gain some confidence while not being pressured to be "the man" off the bench.

DeRozan is going to get his chance to start to guarantee he gets 16-18 quality minutes per game, if & when he shows he can handle it, the minutes will go up! Colangelo doesn't believe Rookies develop by practicing only - and he's right!
Plus lot's of young players get a huge confidence boost when they start. DeRozan will be surrounded by vets in the starting line-up, it should be a good place for him to develop.

Well it's nice to see that you all have everything figured out, you know, because you are hanging out at the workouts and watching them all play.

Seriously though, what's there to figure out? This article says it's confirmed and Triano has said this all summer.

I guess things are slow and we need something to talk about but...?

Seeing this piece concluding with the "FAntasy Perspective" says it all to me. A little taste of reality will be nice.

How about figuring out what our best lineup is in order to win games?

I've always been a big fan of Jay.... but this business of promising starting jobs and guaranteeing minutes is stupid.

It most certainly is. And he seemed like such an intelligent man - I guess eyewear could be misleading sometimes.

Yeah and even if they were decided on starting him why the hell announce it now? Wouldn't a perceived potential battle for the spot create good competition amongst DeRozan, Wright and Belinelli? Would that not be good for the team? Pros should not need any extra motivation but should isn't reality.

I think Triano is doing the right thing by starting DeRozan. I think the entire organization is looking at the development of him in the correct way. Everything they have said and done is to take the pressure off of him while giving him every oppourtunity to grow. Coming off the bench in continually different lineups at different emotional points in the game can mess with a young players own confidence and feel for the NBA game. Starting him will give him the same situation everynight to apply what he is working on in practice. If things don't work out in a particular game, they can bench him.

Also remember it does not really matter who starts the game, it's who ends it.
