Raptors to consider adding Pops

The Raptors will consider adding Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Houston placed Mensah-Bonsu on waivers on Friday, and Toronto cleared a roster spot on Thursday by waiving guard Quincy Douby.

"The timing is purely coincidental," said Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo.

"He's someone we would have to consider, but I've heard there may be a deal in Europe in place for him."

thats why they released Douby :confused2:
getting another PF while Reggie is out, he might be out for a while

jeffb 11-14-2009 12:11 PM

Another big body for insurance in case Reggie is out longer then expected, and he's someone who can give us energy in a sluggish game. I would do it, but he'll probably end up in Europe.

Gurk 11-14-2009 12:13 PM

I would love that. Another energy guy but isn't he somewhat redundant with Amir especially if they were both playing at the same time

LX 11-14-2009 12:19 PM

If Houston can't use him, why do we have such a need for him? I think we could do better than to go out looking for someone that's going to sit in a suit.

strung_out 11-14-2009 12:24 PM

LX has a good point. I don't see Pops getting much playtime once Reggie is all better and ready to go.

It would be nice to have him here but I would hate to see a player like Pops waste his time sitting on bench most of the time.

Why not?

How do you know Reggie wont be out longer, or Rasho/Amir may not go down with a injury? If he comes cheap get him if he wants to come here... even tho he may get more money in europe.

Who cares if hes wasting his time on the bench, hes making his $$ doing nothing! He'd bring what Reggie has been bringing ... Energy off the bench in a suit street clothes or in uniform.

From the playing time he had, Pops look solid. We just love having roster flexibility throughout the season (Dorsey got sent down to D-League) and he didn't get much playing time because now we know we don't need him. Hayes, Landry, Scola and Andersen are holding down the fort.

Raptors definitely could have some use of him.

Raptorman 11-14-2009 12:30 PM

Right now we are redundant with Bosh, Bargs and Turk...and even Jose. These guys are all scorers that cant (wont?) defend and cant rebound. Starting Derosan seems to be adding more scoring and still no defense.

If we have the 4 guys scoring and one BEAST inside grabbing boards and being a force down low, our starters will stop spotting the other team 22 points before the defense starts up.

I say get Pops. And when Reggie is back, have one or the other on the floor at all times.

CB4Real 11-14-2009 12:30 PM

nah we dont need pops it wont help the team he should go to europe where he will get lots of playing time and good money

Pretty much. Raptors need some more defensive minded players and Pops can swat a few shots here and there.

zachus 11-14-2009 12:36 PM

Amir is a better, longer, shot-blocking version of Pops. It's redundant. Houston is without Yao Ming and they're cutting a big man, that's gotta count for something too.

fancylad 11-14-2009 12:44 PM

I loved Pops last year... but i gather that those who want him back are thinking with their hearts more than their heads. I would like for us to have a place for him, but in all honesty we don't.

maybe if Obryant is cut... but i doubt that would happen.

and yeah - Amir Johnson is doing great right now.

great opportunity for colangelo here. unless we're already in the luxury tax. i say sign him

Ex2k 11-14-2009 12:49 PM

Patrick O'bryant is so worthless...... BRING BACK POPS!

According to D. Smith, with the release of Douby we now have 1.8Mil under the luxury tax.

Rye 11-14-2009 12:52 PM

Wow I had no idea keeping douby on the bench was so costly. Pops is worth it, he would be like the raptors assistant captain with the grit and heart he's got.

fancylad 11-14-2009 12:56 PM

guys when would he even see time on the court?

we already have one guy coming back from injury that would play the exact same role as pops. We're going to have to find a way to use him.... Nevermind an extra player on top of that.

It would make no sense.

That wasn't all him. We were 1.2Mil under before they released him.

Rye 11-14-2009 12:57 PM

He would replace Belinelli when his shots stop falling.
