thanks dude.
You weren't far off to be fair. We have at most 15M in cap room if all our free agents leave. So if Lou and Amir sign for 5M each, that drops to 5M left over. So we do have some cap room left. But in that case we might as well treat it like being over the cap and use the MLE instead (5.5M) rather than the cap space.

and agreed, it's close to a pipe-dream to get lou for 5. Amir, well, not so sure...

Default Update

Just a quick update to get our ducks in a row since the trade deadline is coming up.

2014-15:
Kyle Lowry $12,000,000
DeMar DeRozan $10,100,000 (incl 600k likely incentive)
Amir Johnson $7,050,000 (fully guaranteed, includes 50k unlikely incentive)
Greivis Vasquez $6,400,000
Landry Fields $6,250,000
Chuck Hayes $5,958,750
Patrick Patterson $5,831,326
Lou Williams $5,450,000
Jonas Valanciunas $3,678,360
Tyler Hansbrough $3,326,235
Terrence Ross $2,793,960
James Johnson $2,500,000
Lucas (BeBe) Nogueira $1,762,680
Bruno Caboclo $1,458,360
Greg Stiemsma $915,243 (actual pay $948,163, fully guaranteed)
Marcus Camby $646,609 (buyout)
Jordan Hamilton $25,000 (buyout)
Will Cherry $25,000 (buyout)

Nando de Colo $1,901,900 (cap hold; $1,828,750 QO)

Above roster, with NDC overseas: $76,171,523

Cap: 63.035 M
Tax: 76.829 M
Apron/Hard Cap: 80.829 M

We're right up against the tax, with about $650k of cushion. One thing to note: DeMar will not be receiving his incentive. He did not make the all-star team. As such, we can consider that we have $600k additional cushion for tax purposes, if we are thinking purely about whether we pay tax at the end of the year. But for now, that incentive remains on the cap (recalculations of salary are only done in the offseason or in case of a trade), so I kept it in the total for trade rules etc.

Also note that Amir and Stiemsma are now fully guaranteed - this is true of every contract. Once Jan 10th rolls around, there's no longer such thing as unguaranteed money.

Another note: we are now sitting on 2 different TPE's. The one from the Gay trade expired, leaving the one from the Novak deal ($3.44M) and the one generated in the Salmons-for-Williams deal ($2.35M).

As for this coming summer:

2015-16:
Kyle Lowry $12,000,000
DeMar DeRozan $9,500,000 (not including 600k unlikely incentive)
Greivis Vasquez $6,600,000
Patrick Patterson $6,268,675
Jonas Valanciunas $4,660,482
Terrence Ross $3,553,917
James Johnson $2,500,000
Lucas (BeBe) Nogueira $1,842,000
Bruno Caboclo $1,524,000

Cap holds:
Amir Johnson $10,500,000
Landry Fields $9,375,000
Chuck Hayes $8,938,125
Lou Williams $8,175,000
Tyler Hansbrough $4,324,106
Nando de Colo $1,901,900 (cap hold; $1,828,750 QO)
1st Round Pick (assumed 20th) $1,257,800
Greg Stiemsma $947,276

Above roster, with only the 1st rounder kept: $50,757,060

Projected:
Cap: 66.5 M
Tax: 81.0 M
Apron/Hard Cap: 84.0 M

So that's 15.75M in cap room if we let everybody walk. Probably enough to chase a Millsap level player, or make a max offer on a RFA. But it means filling 2 to 4 roster spots with the Room MLE and minimum salaries, including backup C and another wing player, depending on how ready you think BeBe or Bruno are. I've stuck with assuming the 20th pick as a worst case (financially), even though we are projected for the 26th pick right now.

Coon says he is projecting closer to 67.4M for next year's cap now. So there's an additional million in cap room.

do you know when it's the deadline to decide what to do about the new tv deal money? Afaik, the players have rejected a proposal to ease the new money, but I'm not sure if there are further discussions planned?

It can come right down to the moratorium in July. Until they release the final cap numbers everything is a "projection."

Ultimately I don't think the players agree to any smoothing mechanisms (they have said they are open to frontloading into next summer, but I don't think the owners will be happy spending hundreds of millions out of pocket, which would be very difficult to capture with escrow).

So it might come down to how the NBA lays out the specifics of the TV deal. Is the annual amount flat? Does it increase year to year? Early on the suggestion was that they would start at about 2.1B per year and ramp up to 3.1B at the end of the deal. That would drop the cap in 2016 to about 86M, rather than 94M.

Teams told NBA salary cap could hit $100M by 2017-18 season

Quote:
At this week's NBA Board of Governors meetings in New York, teams were advised ‎that the league's salary cap could rise past the $100 million mark as soon as the 2017-18 season, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that, based on current projections, league officials expect the salary cap to increase from its current $63.1 million figure to $67.1 million next season, $89 million in 2016-17, and $108 million in 2017-18. The jumps represent massive increases largely triggered by the influx of television money that will begin pouring in after the 2015-16 season when the NBA's new nine-year, $24 billion TV deal kicks in.

‎Sources say that the league, though, has been careful to stress to its teams that these are not only mere projections but also contingent on the NBA and its players avoiding a work stoppage after the 2016-17 season. Both sides have the right to opt out of the current labor agreement by Dec. 15, 2016.

NBA teams, sources said, were informed Thursday of the latest salary-cap forecasts as well as ‎projected jumps in the luxury tax threshold from its current figure of $76.8 million to $81.6 million next season, $108 million in 2016-17 and $127 million in 2017-18.

In subsequent years, sources said, league officials are projecting a slight decrease in the cap, down to $100 million in 2018-19 (with ‎a $121 million tax line), $102 million in 2019-20 (with a $124 million tax line) and $107 million in 2020-21 with a $130 million tax line.

Salmons trade was on the 29th June (though it may have been finalized on the 30th). Novak was on July 10th. TPE's are good for 1 year to the day.
