So, we shed Novak's deal for Garret, who is unguaranteed and will be waived. That clears 3.75M off the cap this year and 3.4M off the cap next year. Fantastic deal. Now we almost certainly have room for both GV and a full MLE guy to play the 3, and we max out our cap room next summer. I'll break it down more later when we know what deals everyone gets, including front loading and back loading.

If Raptors now decide to use stretch waive on Landry Fields, would have him on cap for $2.08M each of next three seasons

Utah can absord the salary, I also believe a TPE is involved in this.

Because Utah has the cap sapce to absorb his contract? I think matching is only with teams both above the cap

Yes it is because Utah has space. No they don't both have to be above or below. It is about the cap space of the team receiving a player. As long as you can fit the incoming guy under the cap level you don't need to match salary. Same goes for the other team(s) in a trade, but they are totally independent of each other.

In multi-player transactions, the teams can even structure the deals in totally different ways to fit their cap situation as long as the same total of players/picks/cash changes hands.

I wonder what the Jazz forum is saying about the Novak deal.

Considering Novak's defensive liabilities, any addition MU makes will clearly be an upgrade on the defensive end of things.

Jazz need extra salary to reach the league minimum. Novak is perfect for them and they get a 2nd rounder.

Agreed. What a fantastic position to be in.

Question: could we sign a player and use both our max MLE of $2.75 and any other remaining cap room to get him?

We are already capped out. We can use the full mle ($5.15 mil, I think) on one player or a combo of players and still have some room under the luxury tax line. This extra room cannot be combined with the mle. We won't know exactly how much room until we know how the lowry/pp deals are structured.

To answer your question:

The full mle can't be combined with other cap space because you need to be over the cap to qualify for it, and the room mle, or whatever it's called for non-capped teams ($2.575 mil), can't be used with available cap space. It needs to be separate.

Ah, yes, and of course we now generate another TPE, for 3.75M dollars.

Just swimming in those now.

Oh, and the MLE is 5.35M this year, trane.

Well, yes and no. They don't need to hit the minimum. There's no cost except to pay your players up to what you owe below the minimum.

But by instead bringing in a new player, they benefit by getting the pick. So, no, they don't need Novak by any stretch. But he literally costs them nothing, so it's a win for them as well.

So if I'm not mistaken, we have enough cap room next offseason to sign someone to the full max. Who in particular is going to command that kind of money next year? The only two people who intrigue me are Kawhi and Aldridge but aside from that it seems like a shitty FA class.

No way will the Spurs let Kawhi get away from them. Same with Aldridge and Portland.

Durant isn't until the year after. Next year there is also Kevin Love.

Kawhi is restricted, so the Spurs can hold onto him (if they choose to). Aldridge is unrestricted, so he may get away from PDX whether they like it or not.

apparently portland made him an extension offer worth 20M/year for 5 years, he'd be stupid to turn that down. That's way overpaying him btw, at 20M, I don't even want aldridge. He's a good, but not top tier player imo.

If you have a choice between milsap at 12 and aldridge at 20, to me that's a very, very easy decision. In fact, I'd take milsap over aldrige even at at the same salary.
