Yes, and we probably will next year if it comes to that. But I am confident Ujiri can find a taker with an expiring this year coming back. Hopefully he tries in the summer after all the big pieces are gone and teams are looking for cheap role player.

True - important that you note this. For example, say a team has a 5M TPE. They can use that absorb Novak's 3.75M. But we don't get their 5M TPE - we get a 3.75M TPE because we sent out Novak.

Actually, in theory we could trade Novak for 4 guys making the minimum salary, and still get a 3.75M TPE, since minimum salaried guys don't count as incoming salary (but they do count as outgoing salary, very useful little trick).

So you see, it has nothing to do with how the other team absorbs Novak's salary - sending players out, TPE, cap room - so long as we are not taking back non-minimum salary, we create that TPE for 3.75M

Of course they don't. They are looking to use cap room. A TPE and cap room cannot exist at the same time, by definition. They could absorb him with their cap room, to the exact same effect, but I think they have other goals for any cap space they use.

Can our trade exception from the Gay trade be used to sign someone or does it have to be used in a trade?

Trade only, though that includes sign and trades.

Just responding to the idea that miami is an option. They wouldn't use their cap space and the don't have tpes since they are under the cap. Of course, yes, but the question was still asked.

How? Reading the CBA a few times will do that. A little dry, I'll tell you.

As for why, I was interested in the answers to a couple of questions (specifically how exactly Colangelo figured out how to swing the Marion-Hedo sign and trade), dove in to check, and forgot to come back up for air.

So now Patterson with 6M per year over 3 years.

If backloaded:
5,581,395
6,000,000
6,418,605

If front loaded:
6,486,486
6,000,000
5,513,514

So our uncertain salaries are Lowry (10.8M to 13.5M) and Patterson (5.6M to 6.5M).

Meaning total committed salary between them of 16.4M to 20M. That comes out of a budget of 25.3M for all our moves. So we have between 5.3M and 8.9M left over. That's at least enough for the MLE or Greivis, and potentially enough for GV and a big chunk of the MLE if everyone is backloaded.

Raptors would only have about $7.5M to spend to stay under tax. With two spots to fill. Greivis, MLE. TPE the options

Starting to think Williams and De Colo will backup Lowry. I want Vasquez back but unless MU has a deal to dump salary (TH, Hayes or Fields) he'll need to address SF/C positions instead.

I think BeBe was him addressing the C position.

He might want to address the 3, but I think GV is more important long term.

I think he'll lock up gv if he can and think about moves later. He doesn't seem like a guy that likes to lose assets.

True. Is there any way we could sign GV for 5-6mil per and still have the MLE? Maybe we trade a piece + TPE for a SF?

What happens if we renounce the QO for De Colo (is that even possible), waive Buycks/Stone......does that help us at all?

I remember us renouncing Bayless's QO two years ago, so I think it might be possible.

We have the mle regardless. The issue is just whether mu wants to spend into the tax to use it.

A tpe cannot be combined with anything else in a trade. But we can always do things in multiple deals.

Yes you can, and it would bring us that much farther under the tax line.

At this point, expecting Vasquez to get $4.5M or so from Raptors a year. Whatever the number, he will be returning and could happen soon

@Raptors_Watch That he'll be back? 99%. The contract number is a guess, could be higher. Doubt it is lower.

Greivis is talking at a Pan Am Games event next week. Good he will be returning. Might have been awkward.

Yep. Although I already assume in my numbers that NDC has his QO revoked and his rights waived, Buycks and Stone are waived. So don't feel like there's more room to be gained. I'm already assuming the most I can unless someone like Fields gets waived and stretched or something.
