Just typographical errors translating my spreadsheet over to text. The totals were all correct.

Yeah, if he's a free agent. But all things considered, I don't see it happening.

Hey, so this will probably be ignored due to the playoffs and all, but the cap projections have been updated. Looking like an additional million over the previous estimates.

New cap for 2014/15 is 63.2M. New tax is 77 M.

Even better, the new cap for 2015/16 is 66.5 M and the tax is 81M. That's huge, as the Raps are lined up to have real cap space that summer.

In other related news, we have a hard cap figure for this year's draft pick. It will be the 20th pick. That means a cap hold of $1,215,300. And an eventual salary of $1,458,360 when he signs (typical 120%).

bill and jalen were pegging lowry's market this summer at 15M/yr, if that holds (obviously not exactly an informed opinion, but interesting nevertheless), it will cut a major chunk of that cap space ...

No way he gets 15. 12 seems like his ceiling.

Logo Cap going up for next season

Quote:
The NBA 2014-15 salary cap is now projected to be $63.2 million and the tax level is projected to be $77.0 million. The numbers for 2015-16 are now projected to be $66.5 million and $81.0 million, respectively.

The official numbers won't come out until July when the NBA conducts its audit.

The salary cap and luxury tax values for the current season are $58.679 million and $71.748 million, respectively, which means the new cap projection for next season represents a 7.7% increase over this season.

The original revenue forecast for 2014-15 was $4.66 billion, so with an actual revenue of $4.75 billion, the players would get 60.5% of the difference, or $54.45 million, on top of their 50% guarantee ($2,33 billion), for a total of about $2.384 billion.

The increase could make signing Carmelo Anthony far more viable for the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls.

Default Salmons trade

Simple one, this.

TOR out: John Salmons (7.6M)

TOR in: Lou Williams (5.2M), rights to Lucas (BeBe) Nogueira

BeBe doesn't count as salary in the trade, as he isn't signed yet. Toronto takes back less than they send out, so no issues. ATL ends up over the cap, but well clear of the tax, so they can take back up to 150% + 100k of their outgoing salary. 5.2M gets them up to 7.9M, so Salmons fits in just fine.

ATL saves cap room with this deal. They buy out JS for 1M. That means they save Lou's cap hit, minus that 1M, minus a roster slot cap hold. So about 3.7M in savings. More if they were going to sign BeBe.

TOR gets a bench scorer (who expires this year, which is great for our 2015 cap space), and another potential piece, who I hope gets signed and brought over to a) help Caboclo adjust and b) get some backup minutes behind Jonas.

Dan,

Are there any other significant dates looming other than the July 1st beginning to free agency? Specifically I'm wondering how quickly into free agency the top end free agents get secured and whether there are any other dates or deadlines that put pressure on firming up signings. I can't remember from previous years.

July 1st is the beginning of negotiations. July 10th is when players can actually sign contracts. So that's a deadline of sorts, and big names tend to have their destinations sorted out by then. As I recall in 2010 Bosh, Wade and James made their announcements around the 8th-9th. Amnestying players also happens in the first 7 days after July 10th - and amnesty bids take 48 hours, so if teams are amnestying to clear space, they'll have to wait for the 12th to sign players.

Other than that, for minor undrafted and second round signings Summer League starts July 7th (Florida) and 11th (Vegas), so sometimes you want your young players signed by then.

There are other dates, but they rarely actually matter - for example, if you want to withdraw a QO from a free agent, you have to do it before July 23rd. There are a bunch like that that never see the light of day.

Default After John Salmons trade

I'm just going to do the summary for next season, since there's only a few days left in this season and it appears that Hansbrough was not traded (nor waived - there's been no report either way, so I'm assuming he's fully guaranteed now), so there's not much chance any other moves are made in this cap year.

2014-15:

DeMar DeRozan $9,500,000
Amir Johnson $7,000,000 (5 M guar)
Landry Fields $6,250,000
Chuck Hayes $5,958,750
Lou Williams $5,450,000
Steve Novak $3,445,947
Jonas Valanciunas $3,678,360
Tyler Hansbrough $3,326,235 (fully guaranteed now)
Terrence Ross $2,793,960
Julyan Stone $948,163 (unguaranteed until 7th July)
Dwight Buycks $816,482 (unguaranteed until 22nd July)
Marcus Camby $646,609 (buyout)

Kyle Lowry $9,315,000 (cap hold)
Patrick Patterson $7,763,253 (cap hold; $3,557,174* QO)
Greivis Vasquez $5,375,470 (cap hold; $3,898,090* QO)
Nando de Colo $1,901,900 (cap hold; $1,828,750 QO)
Lucas (BeBe) Nogueira $1,419,200 (cap hold; will probably sign for 120% of this)
Bruno Caboclo $1,215,300 (cap hold; will probably sign for 120% of this)

Above roster, with all free agents released (not incl draft picks), and Stone and Buycks waived: $51,191,697

With cap holds, well over cap (77M range).

Estimated:
Cap: 63.2 M
Tax: 77 M
Apron/Hard Cap: 81 M

*NOTE: This is mostly irrelevant, but the qualifying offers for Patterson and Vasquez are different from their standard QO's, because of the new starter's criteria. If a rookie picked 10-30 meets the starters criteria (41 games started or 2000 MP) either in their last year or in the average of their last two years, they get treated as a top 9 pick in terms of QO size. If a rookie picked 1-14 doesn't meet the criteria, they get treated as a bottom 15 pick.

As such, since Vasquez was picked 28th in 2010, and he met the starter's criteria, he gets bumped up to the 9th overall pick's QO level. Note that this does not impact his cap hold. Patterson was the opposite - he was picked 14th, and didn't meet the criteria, so he gets bumped down slightly to the 15th pick's QO.

Again, the cap holds remain the same, they are still restricted, they just have slightly different QO's sitting there if they wanted to play out the year and become UFA's. Something to consider especially with Vasquez - if you are hoping to lock him up for 3M per for 5 years, he'd probably prefer to take the 3.9M for next year and test the waters in unrestricted free agency.

Oh, and mods, is there a reason this is in the General NBA section? Most of the stuff in here is Raptors related for the most part.

Great info DanH - I had no idea about the new QO stipulations. Thanks!

Looks like Stone, Buycks, and NDC are all gone, so here's hoping we re-sign Vasquez, and with the addition of Williams, we should have a very good backcourt.

I also had to check future salaries, but with a lot of salaries, and not a lot of roster spots - depending on if we stash one of Bruno/Bebe - we DO have some large expiring contracts this year, with Hayes and Fields. We may have to package one of those, in a 2 for 1 deal, with one of our more appealing better contracts.

Here's hoping we can re-sign Lowry, PPat, Vasquez!

Between Amir, Hayes, Fields, Williams and Hansbrough we have 28M in expiring contracts. Could do some serious damage at the deadline or this summer.

So Lowry signed for 12M per year. His first year salary could be anywhere between 10.79M and 13.52M. I'll update when I have more info. But for now, assuming he has a flat contract starting at 12M, I'll do a quick update to our current standing with free agents and the tax line shortly.
