Default Q-Rich fix

Oops. Yeah, so since Q-Rich's deal is a multi-year deal (technically) it counts fully against the cap rather than as the vet minimum. Oh well. Fixed.

2013-14:

Rudy Gay $17,888,931
DeMar DeRozan $9,500,000
Amir Johnson $6,500,000
Landry Fields $6,250,000
Kyle Lowry $6,210,000
Linas Kleiza $4,600,000
Marcus Camby $4,383,773
Steve Novak $3,750,000
Jonas Valanciunas $3,526,440
Aaron Gray $2,690,875
Terrence Ross $2,678,640
Quentin Richardson $1,399,507 (probably waived)
Quincy Acy $788,872

Team Totals $70,167,038

Cap: 58.5M (projected)
Tax: 71.6M (projected)
Apron: 75.6M (projected)

That leaves a potential amnesty of Kleiza putting the Raps at 65.6M committed - 6 M clear of the tax, with loads of room to use the full MLE (5.15 M). Team even has the biannual 2M exception available.

Default Trade breakdown updated

Bargs $11,287,500 for Marcus Camby $4,383,773 and Steve Novak $3,750,000 and Quentin Richardson $1,399,507

Total outgoing for NYK: $9,533,280 -> $12,016,600 max absorbed with 125% rule.

Tada - it works. The Raps also receive a first round pick in 2016 (from NYK, DEN has rights to swap), and second round picks in 2014 (from OKC) and 2017 (from NYK).

what's the benefit in waiving a player, just getting an extra team spot?

Yep. It is possible the player accepts a buyout below the full amount, which would reduce his cap hit, but it is rare.

Also possible, but rare, is that the waived player gets picked up on waivers, and another team assumes his contract, thus removing his cap hit.

Lowry / PG? / Stone
Demar / Ross
Rudy / Fields / Novak / Q Rich / Kleiza
Amir / Psycho / Acy
Jonas / Gray / Camby

- Need to trade Camby and/or Q Rich to attain a solid 2 way guard. Ross is not ready to backup Demar full-time. Never thought I'd say this, but maybe get AA back on the cheap if no other team picks him up?

- Amnesty Kleiza and sign a proper backup PG

- What MU does with our backup PG and backup SG situation will decide the fate of our playoff hopes.

thanks, I wasn't sure if waiving has any impact on the luxury bill, would have been nice to be able to waive a guy and at least not have to pay luxury premium on his contract. You'd think paying a guy to stay home is punishment enough ...

what if we trade gray at the deadline to a team with cap space for something like a 2nd rounder, wouldn't that bring us under the cap?

Hey Dan(or anyone with accurate knowledge) ,how does the "Stretch Provision" work and is it something to consider using on Fields and is that a realistic/likely option? How much does it save

We could. But who would take him? And typically, when a team is looking to dodge the tax, they get scammed out of assets to drop that salary. In all likelihood, we'd have to send a couple 2nds or maybe Acy their way as well. Better to just amnesty Linas or find a bigger trade where we happen to decrease salary, rather than pay the price for a salary dump.

Stretch provision means we could waive Landry and have his salary cap hit spread out over 5 years instead of 2. So his total owed (12.5 M) would become a 2.5 M cap hit for each of the next 5 years instead of a 6.25 M cap hit over the next 2. So we'd reduce our current cap hit by 3.75 M, but at the cost of a long term cap hit. Personally I would hate to see it used, because a) Landry at 6.25 is better value than no one at 2.5, and b) Landry becomes an expiring next year, making him a useful trade piece, and waiving him means we can't play or trade him.

who wouldn't. His remaining salary on March 1st is something like 1 million. The tax revenues a team would lose by allowing us to go under the tax cap is probably in the order of 200k or so. So if we were to pay them 1.5 million, they get a free player and beer money for the team. No brainer.
