Default Raptors can trade Bargs for Boozer whenever they want

Quote:
The Bulls have been an over-performing, scrappy team this year. Though Derrick Rose has missed every game rehabilitating his surgically repaired knee and the team has suffered other injuries to key players like Luol Deng and Joakim Noah that’s forced them out of action for stretches, the Bulls currently possess the East’s 5th best record and remain an elite defensive team.

That said, with recent reports that Rose is willing to sit out the entire year with his bum wheel, the outlook on this current campaign is starting to shift. And that, along with some salary cap savings, has them exploring all their options. Including trading Carlos Boozer in a long rumored deal with the Raptors. From K.C. Johnson with the Chicago Tribune:

League sources said last week the Raptors were told the Carlos Boozer and Nate Robinson deal for Andrea Bargnani and John Lucas III was available whenever they wanted it.

The main driver behind such a deal, from the Bulls side, would be the avoidance of paying the luxury tax this season. The Bulls currently sit about $3.7 million over the tax threshold and a Boozer and Robinson swap for Bargnani and Lucus III would save them a little over $4 million and get them under out from under a tax bill they do not want to pay. The Bulls, under the ownership of Jerry Reinsdorf, have long avoided paying the tax even though they’re one of the most profitable teams in the NBA and reside in a major market.

The deal, though, would also be a sacrifice of talent. Though Bargnani has an intriguing offensive skill-set to pair with Rose (whenever he returns), he’s also no where near the rebounder that Boozer is and even less the defender (which is saying something). And while a Boozer move would open up more playing time for Taj Gibson, it’s not like head coach Tom Thibodeau has had any qualms about pulling Boozer in favor of Gibson and his better defense down the stretch of close games.

Whether this deal happens remains to be seen, and a lot of it will, of course, have to do with the Raptors willingness to take on more money after already adding Rudy Gay‘s max salary to a team that’s committed to above market contracts for Landry Fields and DeMar DeRozan. The Raptors, though on a run recently, may not want to commit even more cash to Boozer even if it improves their team to the point that they potentially make a playoff run this season.

But, if they decide they do want to splurge, the deal is there if they want it. The Bulls are just waiting for the word.

This screams that Colangelo could get more out of this deal if he were to take it. Boozer and Teague would be a lot more interesting than Boozer and Nate.

If BC can get the blessing of MLSE financially he'll do it IMO. That'll put the team as an easy pick to make the playoffs next year, which is what BC needs to secure keeping his job

The question is whether we can fit Boozer financially. Next year I believe we'd be a few million over the tax with a Kleiza amnesty. Arguably MLSE would be willing to pay that. 2014-2015 is trickier. We'd be too far over the tax to brush it off especially with a repeater fee. Most likely scenario is Amir or Derozan or Boozer would have to be dealt by the end of that year if nobody takes Fields. That's still 2.5 seasons away so it can be judged as a cross that bridge when they come to it situation. I think MLSE would be willing to take this one season at a time, worry about the 2013-2014 tax and whether they'll pay it, then figure out the season afterwards from there

If we got to the playoffs consistently and made noise in the playoffs, I doubt they'd care too much about paying it.

I think we should try and flip Boozer to the Nets, who are shopping for a PF.
(Trade machine doesn't work, but the Salaries match)

Raptors: Humphries, Milsap, Foye

Nets: Boozer, Anderson, Robinson

Bulls: Bargnani, Lucas III, Kleiza

Jazz: Brooks, CJ Watson, Gray

The Raps get Milsap, a backup pg and can amnesty Hump if need be. Bulls get Bargs and Lucas for Boozer and Nate, just like they wanted. Nets dump Hump's contract, a starting PF in Boozer (huge upgrade over Reggie), and a solid vet in Anderson (Wallace is underperforming). Finally, the Jazz shed some salary, get a nice young piece in Marshon brooks, while also scoring a very solid pg in CJ Watson, who could start for them.

I wouldn't do this until the summer and no way would I take Robinson.....is he expiring? Wait until the summer though if it's truely "whenever they want it". Buy time see if there's a better deal before the deadline ort around the draft. In the meantime hopefully he plays better and raises his value.

Nate's in his prime and he's played pretty well this year for the Bulls. Shooting 40% from 3... 4 APG... great athlete, scrappy and has good lateral quicks and strength. Another guy who would give the team an infusion of balls too.

He'd be a solid upgrade from JLIII. And yes.... he is expiring (only makes a little over $1M though).

Why are people hating on Nate Robinson - he's been rock-solid this year.

One more week to go. This isn't a bad fallback position. Wait until the Summer? Hell no.

like we dicussed before LX....untradeable, GM's see blood in the water. they arent gonna give anything good for him, and why should they really.

Really, I'd be happier playing him out the string and then using the amnesty if he cannot be moved.... OR simply give him away for a first round pick and cash

Boozer has been playing well. If it doesn't work out we'll ship him to Houston for Cole Aldrich and Parsons

Yep. Just keep moving forward. Amnestying him is going to bring no benefits. In the end it would look like MLSE was just trying to save money, even though they wouldn't be saving all that much. Move him now and it looks like they are ready to truly be buyers and head towards doing what it takes to win. They'd have a chance to finally establish a foundation they could build on. They'd have a good two year window to show some success and prepare to do what is needed to take the next step.

MLSE/BC have already said they are willing to spend into the tax. So I don't think that's holding this up. I think it's simply looking for a better deal than Boozer because of his contract.
