Raptors Raptors' backup spots unsettled

Quote:
Raptors head coach Dwane Casey says he'll probably use tonight's game to fiddle with some different combinations and what-not, but by Wednesday he's expected to be in regular-season mode.

"We still got another game to play with the minutes and look at the minutes," Casey said following a Sunday practice that was everything Saturday's wasn't -- crisp, up-tempo and, for Casey, encouraging to some degree.

"I thought the first unit (the starters) had a good day today and the second unit competed but we still have to figure out that sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth spot and make sure we get that rotation solid."

The problem for Casey is no one has really laid claim to those sixth, seventh, eighth or ninth spots behind the starters.

"It may fluctuate until somebody grabs it and runs with it and commands it so to speak," he said. "That may take some time. I like the effort of everybody. It's not like the guys on the second unit are not competing or performing well. (It's just that) They are all kind of playing at the same level. Nobody has stood out or separated themselves."

You can take that one of two ways: Either no one has been good enough or they've all been as good as each other.
Quote:
"We'll get closer to the rotation on Wednesday," he said. "I mean winning is always important, but the bottom line is seeing offensive execution, defensive execution."

As it stands now and based on how Casey has brought his bench into the game, the first subs would appear to be Landry Fields, Tyler Hansbrough, D.J. Augustin and Terrence Ross.

Whether that is how things stand nine days from now when the season opens, only time and perhaps Casey know.

Casey though won't be tipping his hand until at least Wednesday. The bench won't get three quarters of the game the way they did last Wednesday when the Raptors last played, but Casey will use tonight's game with the Knicks to further audition for his second unit.

"Probably not as many minutes for the second unit as last game," Casey said. "Probably the starters will play some more. We'll see how it goes, but it's not about winning the game. It's about guys playing together, looking at different things, different offensive sets and probably tomorrow some different defensive situations too."

I think it is wrong to say no one has grabbed a spot in that 6-9 range. Fields and Hansbrough are obviously going to be there. Ross is very likely to be that 8th guy.

Backup PG is wide open, but I'd bet on Stone to pull ahead. Augustine has just looked bad. I guess he's got a couple more games to impress.

I take that to mean there is no 6th man, and that none of the 4 have taken it.

6th- TH
7th- Fields
8th- Ross
9th- Augustine
10th-Novak

11th- Buycks
12th- Gray
13th- Acy
14th- Daye
15th- Morias/Stone/Wright

6-10 seem obvious given the lack of talent off the bench. Man that's ugly!

Yep. I think that at this point we are 7th-9th team at best. Our bench is weak. TH is the only player that you can really know what he will bring night in and night out.

I'd be shocked if Novak isn't in the rotation given that he's one of the best shooters in the game.

i understand what people are saying about our style, gay and derozan curling off screens is not the way to go. I've always been an inside out guy, only way to go. But i really do think this team is one great 6th man short of being a very good side.

TH and Fields are nailed on to be rotation guys but unfortunately neither is a scorer. I'm scared about ross making it now, but he'll be given mins, probably all season to try and find himself.

i think novak should be given fairly big mins, he's one dimensional but a real scoring threat.

We can't always depend on novak to shoot. It's not like every single team would be oblivious to our coaches novak plays. The other bench players needs to step up.

Novak should be given at least 5-10 minutes a game. That number can escalate to around 20 if need be. He does one thing very very well but other than that...

He'll probably fluctuate all season between 12-20mpg and settle overall at around 15mpg. He should be our go to shooter off the bench unless Ross can get his head out of his ass.

I think eventually Hansbrough will take the starting position and amir will be the 6th man off the bench.

Probably and possibly. I just don't like it when guys like Amir have to cover for terribly 1-dimensional players on the defensive end.

I think Stone deserves a chance over the next 2 games to show if he deserves the Backup PG position ... the other 2 guys have been inconsistent at best. Stone plays sound Defense and runs the offense well without over dribbling. He doesn't have much offensive game, but I would certainly give him more minutes.

Psh, that would even be a step up from what I saw last year. A very large portion of our offense was straight up iso for one of those guys, starting behind the 3 pt line.

I'm not so sure I agree...I think he lacks too much of an offensive game al la Julian Wright, to make a proper contribution to this team. If he had a 3 point shot maybe....
