Raptors Among Teams Calling Suns About Steve Nash before Draft

Quote:

The rumor mill is spinning on the eve of the 2011 NBA Draft, and Steve Nash has been drawn into the thick of it all.

Lon Babby, the Phoenix Suns' President of Basketball Operations, told the Arizona Republic today that the Suns haven't talked about trading Nash and aren't interested in trading Nash, though that certainly won't prevent teams from inquiring about the availability of the 37-year-old two-time league MVP.And it would seem as though Nash isn't completely adverse to the possibility of playing outside the state of Arizona. In responding to the possibility of playing in Toronto for the Raptors, Nash said:

"I feel a loyalty to my team, our community in Phoenix. I want us to try to get back and try to compete for a championship like we did two seasons ago so that's kind of all I think about. So I don't plan on leaving but obviously if the opportunity were ever there, where Phoenix were rebuilding or whatever happens, Toronto would be an amazing place to play. It's a great city. It'd be at home in Canada. To be a part of their, hopefully, future success would be great but I don't really have any plans other than try to get our team back in the playoffs and contend for a championship."

Not exactly an unequivocal rejection of the notion, which leaves the door ajar just enough for the Raptors, owners of the No. 5 pick in tomorrow's NBA Draft, to sneak in and bring Nash back to his home and native land.

i'd absolutely lose it if we traded the 5th for nash. unfortunately, i could see the board licking their chops at the prospects of this deal.

I agree, bad move it that happened.

IGetAir 06-22-2011 08:57 PM

Agreed. I'm even against trading for Parker from the Spurs.
We're rebuilding, let's do it right.

Nash is a HOFer with gas left in the tank.

The man makes everybody around him better. Teammates improve just by sitting on the bench watching the man play.

Torontosaurus 06-22-2011 09:09 PM

I'd want the Nash from 5 years ago

jeffb 06-22-2011 09:10 PM

With the luck we have he'd come here and start looking his age.

i'm not going to argue that at all. the thing is, nash can't defend. it's possible that he's worse than calderon. if we're serious about changing our defensive culture on the team, he's not the player we should be targeting, especially if it's a piece that could be added to the core of our new generation of players.

dude.... dallas became a defensive force even with kidd, barea and terry in the backcourt. It's all about physicality, which is what Casey is preaching.

Good point, the way Kidd and Terry (Kidd especially) were defending in the playoffs made me a huge fan of Casey coming in.

That being said, Phoenix wouldn't trade him unless they received some good young talent back and at that price, is an aging Nash with maybe 2 years left worth it?

dude, i'm talking about steve nash and you're talking about jason kidd.

Don Vito 06-22-2011 09:35 PM

Nash needs to goto a contender like the Lakers, not to rebuilding teams. Its time for him to get a championship.

man, I didn't mean it to be about the player, just that the point is anyone can be fit into the right system. Kidd, Terry and Barea have never been known as good defenders... ever. The physicality that Dallas showed makes me think Nash could play it too. He's a winner, and he is anything but soft.

Windex 06-22-2011 09:41 PM

Dudes... can we trade Bargs for Nash :cookie:
then PHX can select a back up PG for Brooks

What the fuck are you smoking?

Kidd has made the All-Defensive team 9x.

kidd has always been one of the better defenders at the point. even at 38, he's still a notch above half of the starters in the league. terry and barea, you're right, but they've never been known as big of a liability as nash when it comes to defending his position.

bjjs 06-22-2011 09:46 PM

Nash is a reliable defender. He brings effort and positioning.

Yes with his age, he isn't going to be stopping anybody and he'll need help, but who better to mentor a young pg and split court time with him for a year or two before conceding the starting job.

Windex 06-22-2011 09:47 PM

are we having a Nash vs. Kidd debate on defense :dead:

Im Ok with Nash as long as it doesn't come at the expense of our "young talent"

jj33 06-22-2011 09:51 PM

Jose + filler (no pick) for Nash! I'd be all over it!

Jose is like 10 years younger!
