Raptors to amnesty Amir in the summer?

If the the things I'm hearing from people who know more than you and me are right, look for Amir Johnson to be amnestied in the offseason. Seems that they feel he does some stuff well, but no one thing well enough for the price tag he comes with.

oh no!!!

It actually makes perfect sense. If BC is going after a max free agent (say, Deron ;) ) and if, as expected, the draft will yield another power forward, Amir and Bargnani become natural targets for amnesty both by the length of the contract and by position. Of the two, Bargs is the one who possesses more of a unique set of skills, even if he has not been that consistent to far in putting them on display. Hence - Amir. Nothing to do with him as a player or with his contract, as a matter of fact - circumstance.

Noooo I <3 Amir!

INSIDER 04-01-2012 11:41 AM

the log jam at the PF spot pretty much explains why this is probably going to happen. there are too many bodies there and not enough time to go around. bring JV into the mix next year and it gets even worse. in terms of pay and skill, amir is the worst in both regards. amnestying him is almost a given in my opinion.

Since amnesty doesn't have to happen prior to the draft day, it won't, and the draft day might change everything. The chances are slim, but it might.

You shouldnt amnesty quality role players unless you're getting something much better to replace them. I hate this. Amirs true value would be shown on a winning team.

Raptors1995 04-01-2012 01:21 PM

There's no point in using the amnesty on Bargs; for I still think he has some value in a potential trade down the road. I can see BC using it on Amir to free up more cap space, if they can acquire the right free agents to make their team better. After seeing Hickson (5ppg, 5reb) gone for nothing; who was an expiring contract if I might add, I don't really think there's much of a market for Amir. He’s not a bad player and I’m not saying Hickson is better than him, but just the fact that Amir’s contract is a further impediment to pulling off a trade. Combine that with the surplus of PFs on our team, he's the most likely to be amnestied, as Doug correctly noted.

BC is just clearing cap space for Deron

My source says he saw Deron and BC meeting at Hot Topic last time the Nets came into town

You're not going after a max player by amnestying Amir's 5.5Mil. We'd have to dump more salary. Amnestying Amir gives us what 16-17Mil in capspace? Not bad especially if we draft a big anyway.

Edit: Ha, didn't read the rest of the posts. Lol

Nice....
