Default Raptor With the Best Potential (Other than DD)

I know this thread with be filled with DeRozan. But what if we take him out of the discussion?

Would it be Andrea Bargnani, the dude with all the talent but wouldn't use it? Or the intangibles that Amir Johnson brings? What about another similar player in Ed Davis? Or the mystery big man Jonas Valaciunas? The jury is still out on if Bayless can turn into something special.

And by potential, I mean who can turn into a star in the league.

EDIT: Whoops I forgot James Johnson. Is there any way to edit him in the poll.

Currently Ed Davis. Have to see Jonas play more against men.

But to answer my own question, I think Ed Davis is the safe pick. Guys who work hard usually get what they deserve, and this guy has great work ethic. He's already talking about adding muscle, and Ed Davis + strength is intriguing. He also needs to work on his jump shot, but I saw improvement last season. He can already help out on defense and rebounding, and is not terrible in the post. Great fundamentals to build on.

I like what JV can bring. Same thing with Davis, works hard, rebounds and defends. Needs to work on his body for sure. But it should be interesting since he fits the bill of what the Raptors want at the 5 position.

Although he is frustrating to watch, Bayless is a dark horse when it comes to star potential. He plays with a swagger, and wants to get things done. His jump shot is not bad, but needs to add consistency to it. He has the tools to play defense and needs to use them. I think BC was being generous to him at the draft. Had he selected Knight or Walker, I think Bayless would have been the odd man out.

My gut says the big V, but that's just based on too little at this point. So it's Ed Davis, but really, I need to see more of him yet before I would say that with any certainty. Mostly I'm hoping to see a bunch of guys come together and shine as a group more than I hope to see individual potential realized.

it's a toss between davis and jonas. I think Jonas has higher potential, but Davis is almost guaranteed to be at the very least a near all star based on his rookie season. However, it could be that JV has the element of unknown where you can always dream he will be the next big thing, kind of like we dreamt Bargnani will one day be better than nowitzki ...

one thing I'd argue is that both davis and JV have higher potential than derozan who right now is a on a path to become a very good scorer while doing little else. I really want to see derozan's all-around game and especially his defense pick-up next season.

Ed Davis, not by far though. I still really like everyone else's potential. Hell, even JJ can be a great rotational player in this league.

Agreed! I hope we end up with a complete team with no holes a la The last pistons Championship team...

Jonas. Ed is safe, but... jonas looks great so far and he is 3 year younger than Ed, so much time to catch up, and bulk up. Bargs showed his ''potential'', and Amir, really?

The Pistons were a great TEAM too.

But if I had to pick the best team structure, I would pick the Mavs championship team.

A lot of great players, but everyone knows who the ball is going to in the last possessions, and when anytime they need a bucket. Dirk is the leader, but that doesn't mean other players can't step up on the court or in the locker room, such as Terry, Kidd, Chandler etc. Great foundation for a team. I'm not hoping Bargs can be our Dirk. I'm hoping DeMar one day will be our Dirk.

From that poll in this order:

Jonas
Davis
Bargnani
Johnson/Bayless - Good role players

Andrea Bargnani, definitely. But the person who I think has a better chance at fulfilling his potential is Jonas.

it has to be JV or ed davis because JV hasn't even hit the floor yet in the nba so he is 100% "potential" still and ed davis showed he is a player last year and just started playing in the nba

there's no way Bargs is still a "potential" guy, he's been in the league too long to be considered that way, sure he can still improve in many ways but that improvement is like equal to say 10% more of what he is already doing compared to the 100% more of what JV can/will bring when he joins

Too early to say for JV. I'd say Bargniani over Ed Davis because the things that Ed Davis needs to improve on take time and experience. The things Bargniani needs to improve on can happen much quicker, its just up to him and his effort and will.

Martynas, this one's for you, since you know your international ball. I might be wrong, but think I remember you saying a while back that you did not want Toronto to draft Jonas at the time. Was it because of the way Raptors fans are here and the kind of treatment he might get or not clear at the time of whether his game would translate to the NBA?

i am most excited about what jonas can become. i can legitimately see dude averaging 17/11/1.5 in the league. i'm tempering my expectations though, until i see him play in the L but all signs point to him being a pretty good player.
