Canada Raps sign Jamal Magloire to 1 year deal

Guess there was an interloper around the gym Tuesday when Jamaal Magloire stopped by to get a workout in.

He is, after all, an NBA player, NBA gyms are open to all and it’s something he’s done a time or two before when he’s been home.

But is there more?

Maybe.

I keep hearing that Magloire, coming off his 11th NBA season, is on Toronto’s radar as a free agent; a big, veteran centre they could get for the minimum who might be good in practice and the odd game when his mixture of brawn and a willingness to bang some bodies around would help out.

I guess I can see the sense it makes since Bryan has given every indication he’s going to fill out the roster with one-year veterans and other short-termers so he can be a big player either next summer or around the trade deadline as a deal facilitator.

Here’s something else to consider: If you’re looking at a fourth big, would you rather have a veteran like Magloire or a kid like Solomon Alabi.

No offence to Alabi, who they tell me has improved, but simple math would tell you his long-term prognosis isn’t great. You’ve got Bargnani, Amir Johnson and Ed Davis ahead of him now, those three (probably) along with Jonas Valanciunas next season will crowd it any more.

Anyway, I have no idea if a one-year veteran minimum deal (with a remote chance of a non-guaranteed second) would be something that would appeal to Jamaal – I’m also not sure there’ll be a lot teams making calls to him and his people this week – but it would give the HOTH a first: A Canadian guy to have in uniform.

It would also, of course, mean the absolute end of any chance Reggie Evans would be back but I’m hearing that’s rather remote anyway; too much money, likely too many years, too dicey with regards to injury and there are other suitors (Boston among them) who have some interest.

For one year it's fine. I would wait all year in anticipation of a dunk while he covers his eyes. It can only go up from there. Right?

Magloire is a scrub but whatever, he'll just sit on the end of the bench.

He's a really nice dude though, met him before in Scarborough

When I saw him in Miami this past season he looked like he couldn't jump at all...

No thank you to playing on this team.

He could be a good big man coach since he was a pretty good C in his prime back in Charlotte.

there's a lack of veteran players on this team, so Raptors should take him. Plus, this guy was a Beast when he was with Charlotte! Not anymore tho, but still...

i don't ever recall Magloire ever being a "Beast", let alone while he was in Charlotte, which he only played 2 years for (rookie and sophmore year). unless your talking about his physical stature, cuz 4.6 ppg / 4 rpg & 8.5/5.6 are hardly beastly numbers

i correct myself. the team moved to new orleans after so he played 5 season with the hornets organization. still his "prime" was 1 year and nothing really special

I'm pretty sure his run of four or five season averaging around a double double and a block per game in 30 minutes was his prime.

Yeah I'd be confused to if I was referencing his career preseason stats.

Got me confused there as well, his earlier career was pretty good, even his one all star game going for 19/8/1.

For one year as roster filler, whatever.

He is still on the Miami roster non? I woulda preferred him a few years back, but now I wouldnt really. It would be great to have a fellow torontoian, but if he can't get minutes on a roster that was always in need of a decent C. I dont think he'll get playing time before Alabi. Plus he's getting old too....

That's Eastern Conference Champion and All-Star Jamaal Magloire to you, thanks.

Anyway, good deal, shore up the bench bigs, veteran presence, short-term deal, won't actually help us win.
