Raps Not Ready to Give Up on Roko

From Doug Smith's Blog...

Quote:
With all this talk about the Raptors thinking of drafting a point guard (I still steadfastly believe they shouldn’t, unless it’s with a late-teens pick they purchase and even then it seems silly to me), what’s up with Mr. Ukic? Talked to a couple of people around the team this week about him and the sense I get is that they’re not quite ready to give up on him, which is good in my opinion, but that they want some kind of tempo-changer on the roster as well.

(I know, I know, TJ Ford, right? Wrong! A thousand times wrong. That was never going to work, ever. There were issues between TJ and his coaches, TJ and his teammates. Forget it. Put it out of your mind. Let it go).

Anyway, Ukic – whose $1.35 million salary could easily be cap ballast in a trade – is still in their minds, regardless of what happens next Thursday. If his shot’s improved, and he’s been working every day on it, I’m told, he could get some run at the two alongside Calderon. He’s still a heady player, a gym rat, as willing to learn as anyone on the roster and a sponge when it comes to soaking up instruction and information.

It’s ridiculous to give up on a 24-year-old, 6-5 point guard after just one season in the NBA. Hope they don’t.

of course they shouldn't.

Roko was a rookie who had his ups and his downs, but clearly he showed that he has potential.

Why would you give up on a young kid like that?

+1.

Roko has 1 yr of NBA experience.

The guys in this year's draft have NONE.

That's huge. Plus, you can't teach 6'5"... and Roko has a nice swagger to him at times that I really like.

If his shot improves like Jose's did the sky's the limit for him.

If Roko can round his jumpshot into form, he's got incredible athletic tools to go with it. 6'5", long, quick, fast - kids with Roko's tools aren't a dime a dozen. I still think he's going to be a good player if he can put it all together.

Nice. I want to see Roko develop but I still think we need a vetern back-up to Jose just incase Roko is struggling a lot. I don't want to draft a PG cuz then we'll have another young PG learning the game, and I seriously don't want 2 young PG's both making the same mistakes. I think we should draft a SG then grab a vetern PG to help out Roko, just incase. Also, now the Alvin is here he can also help Roko out alot

To be honest i'm really hoping that Alvin Williams can really help Roko going into this season. And i do agree that another vet PG not named Anthony Parker should be brought in.

But he isn't a vetern presence. He isn't even good, he is so injury riddled I doubt he will play half the games this year. If Bank didn't get injured as much I wouldn't mind but we really need some insurance at the PG position

I have a feeling that he won't be back next season. BC has made it pretty clear that a priority was to bring in another PG. I don't know how he's gonna get rid of him and that bloated contract, but as the Kapono deal showed it can be done, and probably will be. Banks and that horrid contract has been moved twice already, 3rd time is the charm perhaps?

I'm all for not giving up on Roko, I think he's got potential, but I DO NOT like the thought of him playing at the 2 with Jose playing the 1.

I think that he's got a great handle and good court vision. The game just needs to slow down a bit for him. He played like a rookie last year. Here's to hoping he improves and plays like a sophmore or a junior this year.

He will never play the 2. Or atleast not until he can shoot the ball with a high effinciency. Until then he will remain the back-up PG

+1 you can't have a bad shooter playing shooting guard. That would be a disaster imo.

It's just a scary thought...on top of him being a poor shooting guard it makes for all kinds of bad match ups on D.

There were issues between TJ and his coaches, TJ and his teammates. Forget it. Put it out of your mind. Let it go

WHAT EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Calderon had a poor percentage as a direct result of confidence and a simple overwhlemed feeling being new to the NBA and thrust into a fairly important role. His Mechanics were awesome, and he was a great shooter in Europe.

Roko.

Who I like, and think can be an NBA'er, has horrible shooting Mechanics, and has never been mentioned in the same paragraoh as even the most marginal shooters.

Kid can do some good things, but lets be honest Trane, he simply can't shoot.

Calderon can. And Calderon could.
