Default Smith: Banks could be traded for Matt Carroll

Quote:
According to a couple of league sources and I can't corroborate this with any of my most trusted Toronto folks, Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo's got another deal bubbling, one that would send guard Marcus Banks to the Dallas Mavericks for Matt Carroll, adding a little long-term salary but providing coach Jay Triano with a shooter that he could use deep on the bench.

I'm warned -- and therefore so are you -- that the proposed transaction remains in its relative infancy and if this summer's proven anything it's that nothing's done until it's done. But just as we suspected, Bryan is thinking of moving a salary for one that’s a bit longer but not that much more expensive in the long haul.

Carroll, a 6-6 guard who will be entering his seventh NBA season, has four years left on his contract, he’ll make $4.7 million this season, $4.3 million in 2010-11, $3.9 million in 2011-12 and $3.5 million in 2012-13.

It’s more money and years than Banks has left – he’ll get $4.53 million this year and $4.8 million in 2010-11 – but the way Colangelo has structured his roster financially over the next few years makes the extra cost on the Carroll deal not that large a burden.
http://thestar.blogs.com/raptors/

Personally, I don't like this deal too much. I know Triano said you can never have enough shooters, but Carroll will really be superfluous, in my opinion, and we'd have to keep him for two additional years. Banks's contract could possibly be a valuable one to trade come next summer. Obviously we can't be too picky when it comes to trading Banks, but a deal in which we would get a small forward in return would be preferable.

Default Raps/Mavs discussing Banks for Carroll trade.

The Toronto Raptors are considering a trade of Marcus Banks to the Dallas Mavericks for Matt Carroll, according to league sources.

The discussions are currently in their preliminary stage.

Carroll has four years left on his contract, he’ll make $4.7 million this season, $4.3 million in 2010-11, $3.9 million in 2011-12 and $3.5 million in 2012-13.

Banks has $4.53 million this year and $4.8 million in 2010-11 remaining on his current contract.

Stick with Banks, frees up space for 2011.

not feeling the trade either. doesn't really make much sense as the salaries are pretty much the same for the next two years, and then we have him for another 2 years after that? He's already been in the L for 7 years, no old guys please.

I wish we had the opportunity here to be picky with where Banks goes and what we get, but we don't. The most we can ask for is a guy that can, even in the smallest of quantities, contribute. Banks wasn't going to see the floor period, even if our point guards got hit with the injury bug. We're not super-deep at the two still, so Carroll will be able to come in for spot minutes, knock down some shots, and can be a bandaid off the bench if one of either Derozan or Belli gets hurt.

I'm not a fan either, but what can you do.

i'd rather let him rot and be done with the salary in 2011. carroll has no place on this team when we already have belli. frankly, if we're that desperate, douby and/or jack can play at the 1 and 2 spots and Bargs can get some minutes at the 3...

I guess the idea could be getting something for nothing. Probably best to have the guy stay at home, but with the idea of losing guys next season - Rasho, Weens, possibly Johnson if he's not re-upped, you want guys to fill out a roster spot. You can't really do worse than Carroll. I mean, he's no a superb defensive player or athlete by any means, but boy can he ever shoot. Excluding last year, he's shot close to or over 40% the past 3-4 seasons.

I'm torn. He's value for a useless pile of crap...but yeah he has a long contract.

I keep coming back to the fact that the good teams are deep and have specialists. If he can come here, sit for long stretches, knock down his shots and not complain i say go for it. If there's any risk of bellyaching or chemistry disruption then look away.

Carroll has career numbers of:

FG%: 41%
3Pt%: 40%
FT%: 85%

He no doubt is an efficient scorer...He's not going to give you much defense. His salary average is $4M/yr which isn't bad. At least he can play and give you some mistake free play from time to time. Add on two years for of contract for a player who can play? Doesn't sound that bad considering the final two years are $3.9M and $3.5M a pop. That's a movable piece. I mean in two season he's not going to be as unmovable as Banks is now and let's face the reality here, there is no way to move Banks without taking on a bad contract. If the Raptors want a player in Bank's spot then Matt Carroll may be the best they can find. Sad but true. Maybe there's a pick involved like someone said earlier but I doubt it. Bank at two years is just as bad as Carroll at three or four years.

Didn't we just rid ourselves of the exact same type of player with as bad a contract?

1. Banks will never play in this league. Carroll is a pretty good role player and always will.

2. His contract is a bit longer, but cheaper.

3. finding ANYONE that would trade for him is 1000-1, so if Colangelo has found the one team that actually having Banks makes financial sense for thier own financial structure moving forward, consider that nothing short of a miracle.

4. When push comes to shove, and BC needs chips to deal during the year, or next year, Carroll is a VERY nice little piece to have. Is Banks????? Nope.

I really wish you guys would give up tearing EVERYTHING Colangelo does to pieces. Honestly, it would take a real, bonified miracle for you idiots to be happy it would seem. Perhaps Colangelo can Do a sign and trade plus cash considerations sending POB to the lakers for Kobe, and Pops to Cleveland for Lebron. There, now everyone will finally agree that the guy running the ship here is pretty effin good???

Good lord.

No thank you. Marcus has less years remaining. I'd rather not do this deal.

So what do you do with Banks in the meantime?

I figure it's something for nothing. 3.5 mil for the next few seasons isn't bad for a one-dimensonal player and someone that fits into our philosophy of being a gunning team.

Meh, just keep him on the bench. Try and trade him for a guy we want with a large contract and I won't mind but we don't need Carrol. We just had Kapono and he didn't fit here.

Not sure who you're talking about? Can't be Kapono, he's due around $6.5M/yr, as opposed to $4M/yr for Carroll.

Bank's deal expires in two years. In two years the Raptors won't be anywhere near below the salary cap to take advantage of it. Essentially Colangelo is ridding his team of a player who isn't fit to play in the league and getting back a player who is.

Sometimes we focus too much on the contract amount. Expiring contracts are good for two things:

A.) Providing cap relief.
B.) Used as trade bait.

Scenario A is of no value to Colangelo for the above mentioned reason. As for scenario B, it sounds like he's not willing to let $4M/yr of dead weight expire in two seasons, he would rather have a player in that spot who can play. I don't blame him. I hope the deal goes through.

Oh and one more thing. It looks to me as though the Mavs are interested in this solely to shed more cap for a potential 2011 rebuild. If they move Carroll now they're only on the hook for $12M in contracts for that summer.
