Default Raps make SI worst deals of the summer list

There are some much worse deals included in this bunch. And maybe we should be happy that this deal was actually done, and not just tweeted.

LINK - SI

Quote:
Raptors re-sign Amir Johnson to a five-year, $34 million deal
Just 23, Johnson has intriguing potential. The 6-foot-9 power forward was one of the Raptors' few quality defenders last season -- according to 82games.com, Toronto's opponents scored eight fewer points per 100 possessions when he was on the court than when he sat. He also shot 63.8 percent from the field, albeit in short stints (he averaged only 17.7 minutes), and in part because of his limited range.
And that's the rub: The Raptors are gambling a lot of money on a player with a limited sample size who doesn't seem like a great fit in terms of their needs. More specifically, Johnson has "played" five NBA seasons, but languished on the bench early in the tenure with Detroit and has just 3,291 career minutes -- the equivalent of slightly more than one season for a solid NBA starter. While he plays the same position as the departed Chris Bosh, he lacks Bosh's bulk (he's listed at just 210 pounds), not an ideal situation because the Raptors are committed at center to Andrea Bargnani, a sweet shooter but not a physical presence. Toronto also used its top draft pick on a thin power forward, 6-10 Ed Davis of North Carolina.
Scant experience and the prospect of an undersized frontcourt with Johnson and Bargnani make giving Johnson a healthy raise and a long deal seem overly pricey. Didn't the Raptors learn their lesson overpaying Hedo Turkoglu?

There are plenty more, Darko getting 5 isn't exactly great either. Wes Matthews at 5yr/34mil is pretty horrible too.

I thought it was a 5 year, 30 mil deal. I like Johnson, but yeah, we had to overpay. So, SI figured that because we draft a big out of college (mind you, the BPA at 13), that we shouldn't have paid Amir? That's BS. I'm sure SI also had an article last year declaring Johnson to be a breakout player for 09-10 with the Bucks. But yet, this year, by the same website, he's declared to have one of the worst contracts.

The Boozer deal is horrible. All that money to someone who's 28-29?

Pretty much, most of the signings are horrible unless you are Miami.

He criticized The Magic's signing of Duhon (that signing was solid - less than 4 million a year for a solid backup, especially considering Nelson's history of injuries. He's good for one every year). Wow. I guess that writer is probably based in either Chicago or Miami considering there was no criticism on their moves.

Oddly, there are way more positive points in that blurb than negative. Not sure it makes sense actually.

The problem with size is pretty apparent. The question is whether they can play small and run and make that overcome the size issue. They do have some length, and might have been able to get some offense off their defense in the same way OKC did, with not much size. But I think that idea is hampered by not getting Chandler, and getting Kleiza instead of Barnes.

Right now they look like a team that is definitely going to have to bust their asses on both ends of the floor, like last season. Unlike last season where they at least got some results on the offensive end, I don't see them getting the desired results on either end. But let's see who else comes in possible trades, and see what kind of magic a guy like Barbosa can bring to the uptempo idea.

I don't think Bosh was THAT good. If toronto grabs a couple decent guys with the TPE I think the team is better by far to be honest.

not sure if you watched amir's presser, but it looks like we gave him an extra 10 million over the market value. considering we have the minutes to offer him, there's no reason for that. unless amir blows-up this season, they're right. it's deservedly listed as one of the worst contracts because it's a horrible contract to give someone who doesn't have the offence capabilities, height or strength to be a legitimate starting power forward on a winning team.

We'll see about that. Anyway - where does Bosh even come into this? Outside of the fact that we're back to being thin upfront like when he was a rook?

Let's not lose sight of the fact that overpaying Johnson, to the degree where he broke out into mad laughter at his press conference as Jacko alluded to, killed the chance of getting Barnes. So now instead of a sure starter, we have a backup getting paid way more than he thought he was going to get. Amir is going to have to improve, and fit really well into the new uptempo schemes to make it worthwhile. If that happens then no complaints. But it feels like this team is just grabbing at straws.

Honestly, it's a poorly written and laid out argument for that being a bad signing. It isn't. The cash he got, he was getting EVERYONE is getting over paid this year. Fuck, look around.

23 year old kid with nothing but athletic talent and a strong desire to compete, to improve, and to be in Toronto.

Honestly, unless his name is fucking Lebron James everyone here loses their minds.

Keeping him was a respectable move. Maybe a gamble, but fuck, eventually one pays off.
