Raptors Raps interested in Chuck Hayes

Quote:
HOUSTON - Free agent forward Chuck Hayes has five teams expressing strong interest in him and his agent told FOX 26 Sports Hayes could be ready to make a decision by the weekend.

"The teams that are involved with Chuck Hayes are the Portland Trailblazers, the Toronto Raptors, the Houston Rockets, the Sacramento Kings and the Minnesota Timberwolves," Calvin Andrews said.

"That's our focus right now."

Andrews said he's had two conversations with Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and is expecting to speak with him again on Thursday.

Andrews said there is no frontrunner at this point, but talks have reached the serious stage.

"I would say we have agreements on ranges with some people," Andrews said.

Free agents cannot sign contracts until Dec. 9.

Andrews was asked what he and his client need to do next.

"Take final offers and make a decision," Andrews said. "I can see us having an idea what he wants to do in the next 48 hours."

hmm, this is quite interesting, how much do you think we should offer him, if we should offer him anything?

Wouldn't be a Chuck Hayes thread without including this video:

Zero. I like the guy, but there is a major reason why Houston has been rumoured to be chasing a C for as long as Yao has been dealing with injuries.

He's not a bad player but he's not the guy we need. If we had a problem at the 4 I'd say sure but we don't so I'd take a pass.

i'd take him as our back-up center/power forward in a second. he might be only 6'6", but he plays big and works his tail off. he's easily one of best defensive centers in the league. he's not going to protect the rim, but he sure as hell won't let anyone near it.

Thumbs up to Chuck Hayes.

Laugh all you want about his size, but he got 8.1 rebounds a game last season in 28.1 minutes.

this makes no sense to me. unless we're moving a whole bunch of guys or the contract would be very short, he's just another undersized guy playing the c position. he's a good player, but not one that's going to make us competitive. might as well bring back reggie.

neither davis or johnson can play center. hayes can.

i don't anticipate both hayes and chandler being raptors, but these are the players we need if we ever want to successful incorporate a defensive system worth watching or talking about. just having a defensive minded coach and a handful of lackluster defensive players won't resolve anything.

The difference is, Hayes can take the abuse better. Playing Center is hard on the body. I'm not sure Amir's back could handle playing Center 82 games for all his minutes on the court.

undersized.
i like his work ethic, but the reality is, we need to focus on getting a true center.

I dont think another undersized big man on this team is needed. We already have a 7 footer who thinks hes a shooting guard. If Davis gets stronger Ill say hell be better at C than Hayes is

If Chandler is not available, I think this a guy highly recommended by Casey. Mavs were in the same division with the rockets, so Casey got a good look at Chuck Hayes. He is the complete opposite of Bargnani, he rebounds and knows what he is doing on defense. He may not protect the rim with blocks, but he protects the rim with charges. If the team is preaching defense and needs a cheap short-term solution at the C position, Hayes is a good option.
