Raptors Raps have interest in PG Gal Mekel

Quote:
One of the NBA's sleeper free agents is becoming more and more of a common name.*Point guard Gal Mekel, fresh off leading little Maccabi Haifa to an upset of Euroleague Final Four regular Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv for the Israeli championship earlier this month, appears to be inching closer to an NBA roster for next season.*Mekel had an eye-opening workout last week with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to sources close to the situation, and will audition Monday for the Dallas Mavericks. Sources told ESPN.com that the Toronto Raptors, meanwhile, are the latest team to express interest in Mekel, who has made major progress since his days at Wichita State from 2006-2008 and increasingly appeals to NBA teams thanks to his size, ability to read the game and, most of all, his pick-and-roll proficiency

I really want Kabongo. However, the hit on the kid is that he has trouble finishing at the rim (strength, average explosiveness) and has a broken jump shot. But he is pass-first, great court vision, quick first step and great ball hadling, and good character. With role players on the second unit, Kabongo would great fit (initiate offense, ball distributor) off the bench for the Raps.

Kabongo has great defensive potential, too.

If he can fix his jump shot he could be a really nice starter.

If we are looking at a PG prospect in the second round, I think we should take a look at Peyton Siva from Louisville.

This guy impressed me every time I watched him play. He puts an effort on both ends of the floor and distributes the ball well. He really plays with a fearless attitude. His life story is also amazing. He was from a tough neighbourhood. His father was once on the verge of suicide after drug addiction before Siva managed to stop him and turn his life around. That's what you look for in second round picks. With a winning attitude and leadership potentials, I think Siva would be a better choice than Kabongo.

hes worth a shot, but he cant shoot, his jump shot has a slow release, and he barely gets off the ground with his shot for some reason... I love him as a person, but he needs to work on many things, its hard being a small guy in the big leagues. Maybe a DJ Augustin? fare able comparison

The guy barely played all year due to his suspension. Im sure he'd be higher if people could have actually judged his play.

That's a legit point. His jump shot is probably the weakest part of his game. The one promising stat is his improvement from the free throw line- 61% to 68% to 74% to finally 87% last season. They say that free throw percentage and outside shot percentages are linked. If the training staff can work with him properly on that shot, I can see him developing a respectable jump shot.

That being said, I honestly see him being selected higher than most mock drafts. Maybe somewhere around 40-45.

I keep hearing about players with no jump shot (in the draft), why? What makes you guys think that's a good idea, I don't get it.. We need shooters and/or experienced players. Not a project who can't contribute to the current team....

It's very difficult to find a great shooter right out of the draft, especially outside of lottery picks. Look at Terrence Ross. He was supposed to be one of the best shooters from last year's draft. Last season, he was at best an average shooter.
